My Fake Boyfriend and 1Up, two movies from BuzzFeed Studios and Lionsgate, have been acquired by Amazon Prime Video for release this summer.
We are thrilled to share the first trailer for Kyle Newman’s upcoming movie 1UP, which will be available on Prime Video. The movie is about a girl’s quest to create an all-female Esports team and defeat the chauvinist males club that kicked her out. In the clip, Paris Berelc (Hubie Halloween) gathers a bunch of eager players and hires her professor (Ruby Rose) as their coach to prepare them for the crucial game that will determine not only the fate of their team but also their futures at the school. The movie will only be available on Prime Video on July 15 when it debuts.
Vivian Lee (Berelc), called V, a varsity Esports player who lives and breathes gaming, is introduced in the video in a right way. She works nonstop in the hopes of leading her group, The Betas, to victory. She’s in luck because The Betas are terrible. In spite of being a nationally ranked player on her squad, her male teammates only accept her onto the team because she is a girl rather than for her abilities. They personify annoying, “get gud scrub” male gamers.
The demeaning nature of the squad’s leader Dustin (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and his refusal to accept responsibility for his errors all contribute to V’s understandable decision to leave the team in disgust, even if doing so puts her scholarship in jeopardy. She can only build a new varsity team as her strategy to maintain it. She directly passes through The Betas because there is only enough financing for one team.
The remainder of the trailer mainly serves as a training montage for the revenge arc involving V, her companion, and their new female colleagues. With The Betas trouncing them at initially, things don’t starting well, but no good vengeance arc begins with the heroes at their weakest. This motley crew discovers their saviour in their professor, who offers them a new moniker, The 8-Bits, and all the instruction they require to succeed in traditional video games. Her unusual methods—which include live-action role-playing and building a “realistic” Beta dummy to channel their rage toward—are sufficient to get the group ready for nationals and The Betas.
Berelc, Rose, Zakhar Perez, Lolita Milena, Kevin Farley (The Waterboy), Stephen Joffe, Hari Nef (Assassination Nation), Nicholas Coombe (The Wilds), D.J. Mausner (Insecure), Madison Baines (Transplant) (Alias Grace). The Umbrella Academy actor Elliot Page originally played Rose’s part as the team’s coach and generally cool, accepting gaming professor Parker, but the actor finally left the film.
With Julia Yorks (The Adventures of Puss in Boots) on board to script, Newman both directs and stars in the movie. After his 2015 action comedy Barely Lethal, Newman’s first film behind the camera since is 1UP. Along with collaborating with well-known musicians, Newman also directed two music videos for Lana Del Ray and Taylor Swift’s “Style.” BuzzFeed Studios and Lionsgate worked together to produce the movie.
On July 15, 2022, 1UP will be available on Prime Video.
After being released five days earlier in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the U.K., Latin America, and Brazil, the romantic comedy My Fake Boyfriend, starring Keiynan Lonsdale (The Flash), Dylan Sprouse (After We Collided), and Sarah Hyland (Modern Family), will make its U.S. debut on June 15. After making its debut on July 8 in Australia and New Zealand, the esports and gaming comedy 1Up, starring Ruby Rose (Batwoman) and Paris Berelc (Alexa & Katie), will stream on Prime Video in the United States on July 15.
The two movies were produced as part of a long-term collaboration between BuzzFeed and Lionsgate to make movies for Millennial and Gen Z audiences. Book of Love, the debut feature from BuzzFeed Studio, was previously released by Amazon in February.

Block Party, a Juneteenth family comedy starring Antoinette Robertson and Margaret Avery, and Dear David, a supernatural thriller starring Justin Long, Augustus Prew, and Andrea Bang, will also be released by BuzzFeed Studios later this year, as THR previously reported.

Everyone can play games, yet the culture of video games still has some negative stereotypes. In a heightened and humorous manner, 1UP provides a very true critique on such divisions. Additionally, 1UP is both a sports movie and a gender comedy. It was extremely difficult for a filmmaker to breathe life into watching people watch screens. However, we created a vivid and fluid visual vernacular that, in my opinion, draws in spectators and highlights this thrilling sport.
In 1UP (Knights of the Elder Orb), everyone is also playing a brand-new game, and occasionally the plot immerses us in it, making for some quite memorable situations. The movie has more than 1100 visual effects shots and around 4 minutes of animation (in a multitude of styles). To put it mildly, it was a beast of a movie to make in just 25 days with such a meagre budget.
Working with the talented ensemble at Buzzfeed Studios, led by Paris Berelc, Ruby Rose, Hari Nef, and Taylor Zakhar Perez, as well as the visionary Richard Reid, was an absolute joy. I firmly believe that we have written a narrative of which gamers may be proud; I know we are.
