Lucy Worsley, a popular British historian, will take on the role of detective in an upcoming documentary series investigating several great mysteries from British history, including who killed the princes in the Tower of London in 1483 and if King George III was indeed “crazy.”
Lucy Worsley Investigates is a four-part series that focuses on a particular event and uses historical and contemporary data and a variety of specialists to redefine history. Worsley also looks at how modern attitudes about children, gender politics, class, and mental health have contributed to the concealment of the truth in these situations.
The series kicks out on May 15 with “Princes in the Tower,” which looks at King Edward IV’s young sons’ disappearance in the Tower of London in 1483, which many have suspected was a murder carried out by the boys’ uncle, who has crowned Richard III soon after. Worsley goes into the period surrounding the princes’ claimed deaths and the context of the War of the Roses to unearth an intriguing series of events leading up to their disappearance.
On May 22, Worsley’s “Madness of King George” will be released, in which he examines how Britain’s “mad” monarch affected attitudes toward mental health and explores the pressures on George as ruler during a time of great political upheaval, which included a brewing revolution in France, an emperor murdered in Russia, and Britain facing the loss of its American colonies. As Worsley interacts with renowned psychiatric experts, it becomes evident that these circumstances contributed to George’s periods of mental illness, which would have led to a bipolar diagnosis.
Both episodes will air on PBS, PBS.org, and the PBS Video app in the fall of 2022, with two more episodes to follow in 2023.

In the United States, Lucy examines the Lizzie Borden trial, which captivated the nation – particularly Victorian women, who crowded the courtroom to watch the proceedings in what one reporter characterized as a “sea of calico and lace,” referring to the female fascination that spans socioeconomic boundaries. She also looks at the case of Hannah Mary Tabbs, an African-American woman who murdered her lover, with Professor Kali Nicole Gross, to see how race played a role.
Each episode focuses on a genuine incident, with Lucy delving into the crime, how it was received at the time, and how it parallels current events. Throughout the series, she is joined by an all-female detective squad of historians, attorneys, journalists, and psychologists to delve deeper into the social concerns and events that led to the creation of these murderesses.
