Where Can I Watch Anne Boleyn: Season 1 (2021)?

Anne Boleyn is a new British three-part psychological thriller miniseries developed for Channel 5. It is written by Eve Hedderwick Turner and directed by Lynsey Miller with historian Dan Jones an executive producer. This period drama chronicles the months leading to the beheading of Queen of England Anne Boleyn, who played a pivotal role in the English Reformation. It’s a tale of diplomacy, betrayal and a whole lot of patriarchy that attempts to resonate with the woman of today.

The drama that is being called ground-breaking for its casting of Queen & Slim star Jodie-Turner Smith portrayed as this titular historical figure (Anne Boleyn), the first ever black woman who will bring the iconic historical figure to life on screen in a new way. Along with Turner-Smith, there are many familiar faces taking on the roles of key figures from the Tudor period.

White House Farm star Mark Stanley stars opposite her, as Henry VIII, the most famous king in British History and Dating Amber’s Lola Petticrew causes complications as Anne’s love rival, Jane Seymour. Gangs of London star Paapa Essiedu plays Anne’s brother George, and Jamael Westman is Jane Seymour’s ambitious brother Edward. Silent Witness star Amanda Burton also joins as stoic Governess, Lady Anne Shelton.

The drama shines a feminist light on the Boleyn’s final months, during which she struggles against the powerful Tudor England’s patriarchal society, for the survival of her young daughter—the future Queen Elizabeth I—as well as this, it showcases her strength and determination in such a challenging time.

After “failing” to provide her husband with a male heir, she must face not only the king’s wrath (and infidelity), but also stake out a path for her family, even if she must die for it. The climax, of course, filled with rage and redemption in equal measures is testament to just how unjust the society can be towards women with ambitions.
