Led by Simon Rex’s magnetic performance, Red Rocket is another vibrant, ground-level look at modern American life from director/co-writer Sean Baker. Red Rocket centers on Mikey Saber (Simon Rex), a washed-up porn star who returns from Los Angeles after a decade working to his small Texas hometown—regardless of the fact that no one wants him back.
Through his sweet talks, he manipulates his way back into the lives of his ex-wife Lexi (Bree Elrod) and mother-in-law (Brenda Deiss) after loses his career. To pay the rent he’s promised his wife, Mikey combs the area for a job, flunking every interview when reluctant to explain his long periods of unemployment.
In desperation, he finally meets a luminous 17-year-old donut shop employee whose nickname is Strawberry (Suzanna Son), whom Mikey is convinced is the key to getting back into pornography and rejuvenating his career. Their evolving relationship sets Mikey further down the path of lies and deceit. Will he achieve the life he’s always wanted, or will it destroy him?
Red Rocket is certainly not for everyone. But after a while, following Mikey’s story becomes tedious; the pacing is too slow and it amounts to nothing much of the time, repetitive in its exploration of its central character and haphazard in developing his journey. Slow and frustrating, with a finale that is unearned, Red Rocket fluctuates between trying to say something and getting lost in its own premise.
