This December, Showtime will kick off Hip Hop 50, with the release of the documentaries Ricky Powell: The Individualist, Video Music Box (w/t), and Rolling Like Thunder. Hip Hop 50 is a multiyear, cross-platform programming initiative between Showtime and entertainment company, Mass Appeal, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop.
Ricky Powell: The Individualist is directed by Josh Swade and is produced by Time Studios and Swade Films. The Individualist tells the story of legendary NYC street photographer Ricky Powell who rose to worldwide fame while capturing one of the wildest, most electric times in popular culture.
From the Beastie Boys to Run DMC to Madonna to Warhol and Basquiat, Powell documented the music, fashion and art scenes of the 1980s and ’90s in downtown New York. There is perhaps no photographer who captured the Eighties and Nineties hip-hop scenes in New York better than Ricky Powell.
The film features a plethora of icons from the entertainment and visual art worlds including music and street art legends like Chuck D, LL Cool J, Mike D, Vin Diesel, Laurence Fishburne, Debi Mazar, Natasha Lyonne, Mark Ronson, Fab Five Freddy, Zephyr and Futura.
Powell and some of his notable subjects reflect on his fascinating life and work — as well as the demons that shaped him. Powell became known as “The Rickster” – a man who wasn’t just covering the scene, he was the scene.
