‘The Summit of the Gods’ is an animated film finds a mystery on Mount Everest. The movie begins as a fanciful mountaineering detective story with roots in the calamitous real-life 1924 Everest expedition.
A Japanese photographer Fukamachi accidentally finds a camera that may well have belonged to George Mallory, a famous mountaineer who goes on a mountain-climbing adventure along with his companion Andrew Irvine in 1924. But they went missing leaving a tantalising question mark over whether or not he succeeded. While Mallory’s body was eventually discovered (in May 1999), Irvine’s and the portable camera with which they used to document their journey never was found.
Before Fukamachi can see the film, a mysterious Habu Joji, who is an outcast climber believed missing for years comes along and takes the camera. Now, Fukamachi enters a world of obsessive mountaineers hungry for impossible conquests on a journey that leads him, step by step, towards the summit of the gods.”
Directed by French animator Patrick Imbert, the movie has been adapted from Jiro Taniguchi’s acclaimed manga series of the same name. The manga was previously adapted into a Japanese live-action film, titled Everest: Kamigami no Itadaki, in 2016.
