Will There Be A Demonic 2?

Written, directed, and co-produced by Neill Blomkamp, Demonic is a science fiction, supernatural horror movie. Pulling influences from Christianity and infusing it with a plot that dances around futuristic technology to progress, Demonic 2 is an original and experimental idea by Blomkamp himself.

It was made with the help of AGC Studios. Blomkamp, who is known for diving into the world of science-fiction and the supernatural for his films, kept his creative vision intact with Demonic 2, using several VFX elements.

The story follows Carly, who wakes up having nightmares of her homicidal mother, whom she despised, burning her. She learns from her friend Martin that she was hospitalised and in comatose.

As she visits her in the hospital, she is made to connect with her via a simulation that lets her enter her mother, Angela’s dreamscape where she encounters a demonic creature.

After sharing her story with Martin, she learns about people undergoing demonic possessions, making them commit heinous crimes such as burning and killing people, and realises this is what happened with Angela. She also learns about a group of exorcists acting as a black ops unit to undo such possessions.

She is hindered by several obstacles as the demon tries to latch onto Carly. She enters Angela’s dreamscape one last time and watches her die. She then has an encounter with the demon and uses a Vatican lance to finally kill it.

    Blomkamp: On Demonic

Blomkamp shared his views regarding Demonic in an interview with SYFY WIRE –

    Blomkamp On Demonic

“I was always heavily influenced by Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project, and I knew — even going back years — I knew that at some point I really wanted to try to self-finance a small horror film to just go through that experience and see what that would be like. I always had that in the back of my head, and then I think of this movie like a whole bunch of puzzle pieces that were all sort of separate elements that came together.

So I had the sort of love affair with these low-budget horror films that filmmakers had just shot themselves in locations that they had access to, which I thought was really creative. Then the pandemic happened, and any bigger project was on pause until people knew what was happening.”

    Demonic 2: Release Date

Demonic was filmed during the pandemic and naturally, underwent several delays during its filming process. It was finally released on August 20, 2021.

Despite being poorl y received by critics, one burning question lingers in the minds of the audience. Will Demonic have a sequel? Since the movie just released, there’s almost no information about the possibilities of a Demonic 2.

That being said, it is Blomkamp’s first foot into the world of horror. He has previously directed the science-fiction action film, District 9, which is set to come out with a sequel. This makes fans of Demonic hopeful since it might have a sequel sometime in the future as well.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said,

“Neill Blomkamp exploded onto the filmmaking scene with District 9 and has made his mark by creating films that challenge and subvert the genre. It’s exciting to work together on this highly anticipated new vision, and be immersed in yet another world terrifyingly similar to our own.”

The movie was filmed in British Columbia and eventually, acquired by the U.S. Considering the movie is conceptually very unique and the fact that Hollywood loves sequels for its supernatural movies, Blomkamp writing Demonic 2 is very much a possibility, for reasons pertaining to both, expansion of the universe and higher sales.

    Demonic 2: Cast

Demonic stars Carly Pope (Elysium) as Carly, the protagonist, Nathalie Boltt (Riverdale) as Angela, Michael Rogers (The Blacklist) as Michael, Terry Chen (They Wait) as Daniel, and Chris William Martin (The Age of Adaline) as Martin. Following the death of Angela, Michael, and Daniel, Demonic 2 is unlikely to have them unless it is a flashback sequence.

Chris William Martin and Carly Pope might come together once again for the sequel alongside a new cast.

Carly Pope has worked with Neill Blomkamp before in the movie Elysium but Demonic was the first time the both of them worked together in a long form project, for months. She is also on excellent terms with him and a future collaboration sounds highly likely for the duo.

She was recently interviewed by Screen Rant where she shared her views on Blomkamp –

“He’s always incredibly approachable, incredibly relatable – and as you said, superbly innovative. I really appreciate his choices and his commitment to his choices. He’s amenable to things if it makes sense but also will push back if it doesn’t because he’s got a vision. And I really value that kind of collaboration, and also being under somebody’s guidance that knows what they want to make.”

Plot for Demonic 2: What Can It Be About?

Similar to Demonic, a Blomkamp directed Demonic 2 is likely to follow a similar blend of science fiction and supernatural elements. And with this universe, horror is part of this exciting mix. Demonic 2 can go two ways – It can be a continuation of Demonic or it can be a whole new story with a different plot.

If it follows a pattern similar to that of James Wan’s ‘The Conjuring’ series, Carly Pope and Chris Williams Martin are likely to return to the franchise for a new grim experience. They might get affiliated with the exorcists as well.

This is possible due to Martin’s knowledge regarding the demonic possessions and Carly’s experience with the simulation and killing a demon. Being someone whose entire life has been plagued due to her mother being possessed, Carly is likely to understand the matter better than most other exorcists.

Together, they can try to help others experiencing demonic possessions.

The other pathway the plot can take is that of a completely new story. Demonic possessions might be a part of it or they might be rejected altogether. But it will most definitely have a demonic element along with science-fiction. Maybe a simulation that breeds demons or a video game universe with demons in it.
