    Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trailer Features Gozer?!

While rebooting itself, the Ghostbusters series is still striving to find its foothold. So, let’s go back to the beginning. The new trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife introduces new characters while also harkening back to the 1984 original. There’s even a brief shot that could be alluding to the return of Gozer, the Sumerian shape-shifting God of Destruction whose ambitions to destroy the planet were foiled by the original Ghostbusters crew.

This new picture appears to be a straight continuation of the first two films. Jason Reitman, whose father, Ivan Reitman, directed the original Ghostbusters, is directing Ghostbusters: Afterlife, so this new picture represents a passing of the torch from father to son.

The new trailer demonstrates that Jason is reimagining what many fans appreciate about these films while also adding something new. The Ecto-1, proton packs, ghost traps, and P.K.E. metres are all present, but it takes place in a completely other setting: Summerville, Oklahoma. This new locale surely brings a distinct style to the franchise that is unlike anything else.

A family moves into a frightening, ancient house in this little town, as seen in the trailer. Egon Spengler, their grandpa, left them the house. Of course, Spengler’s house was littered with mementos from his ghost-busting days. When they are discovered, it appears that they have awakened the town’s spirits, and our new heroes set out to combat them.

In one scene from the trailer, a hand emerges from the grave. With a statue of Gozer in the background, the hand appears to belong to Gozer. A scene in the first trailer that showed a sign for the Shandor Mining Co., as in Ivo Shandor, is another signal that Gozer may return. Shandor was a leader of the cult of Gozer, who used the structure to communicate with the afterlife.

Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, and Carrie Coon are among the new cast members. Afterlife is due to hit theatres this Thanksgiving, so we’ll have to see if Gozer returns to finish the task he started nearly 40 years ago.
