Turning thirteen is such a significant milestone in a boy’s life that the entire world should pause and celebrate it. At least, that’s how 13: The Musical, a new musical due to air on Netflix in mid-August, makes you feel.
The story follows a young guy who moves from New York City to a tiny town in Indiana and intends to turn his Bar Mitzvah into the trendiest party ever in order to negotiate the difficult social circles of his new school and neighborhood. However, you may be wondering how fantastic a Bar Mitzvah celebration may be. Based on the streamer’s first-look photos, it appears to be rather stunning.

Is “13: The Musical” based on a true story?
The images reveal that 13: The Musical will look exactly like you’d expect it to be brightly colored, with lots of happy kids who look like they’ve just come out of Glee. And, based on the photos, leading man Evan Goldman (Eli Golden) more than succeeds in enlisting the support of all the cliques. They seem to follow him around everywhere he goes, or… maybe it’s all in his imagination, like in musicals. Poor Evan, if that’s the case.
Having directed various music videos and sitcom episodes during her career, the filmmaker has a strong vision for musical numbers and comedy. Davis has directed episodes of Dead to Me, Younger, You’re the Worst, Future Man, and a slew of other shows, including Hanson, Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, The Smiths, and Depeche Mode.
Robert Horn authored the screenplay, which he adapted from his own musical, which he co-wrote with Jason Robert Brown and Dan Elish. The Broadway musical created history by becoming the first to have a full cast of teens.
13: The Musical’s cast also includes Debra Messing, Rhea Perlman, Josh Peck, and Peter Hermann, in addition to rising sensation Golden. Gabriella Uhl, JD McCrary, Frankie McNellis, Lindsey Blackwell, Jonathan Lengel, Ramon Reed, Nolen Dubuc, Luke Islam, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Kayleigh Cerezo, Willow Moss, Liam Wignall, and Khiyla Aynne are among the adolescent cast members.
On August 12, Netflix will release 13: The Musical.
