According to Deadline, “65” was first announced in September 2020, with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods directing, writing, and producing “under their newly founded Beck/Woods brand.” Producers Sam Raimi, Zainab Azizi, and Debbie Liebling have also been announced.
After finishing “The Last Duel,” there was considerable ambiguity regarding which of Adam Driver’s numerous unfinished projects he would pursue. According to Variety Insight, “65” wasn’t far down the list for Driver; principal production for the film began just a few months later, on November 30, 2020, and finished in January 2021.
In terms of casting for “65,” Adam Driver is unquestionably the main draw — not least because, like Scott Z. Burns’ “The Report,” this will be only the second time in at least a half-decade that Driver will be working with up-and-comers rather than established A-listers.
Two more actresses, both child stars, were added to the cast in the months following the project’s initial announcement: Ariana Greenblatt (Disney Channel’s “Stuck in the Middle”) in November 2020 (via Deadline), and Chloe Coleman (Amazon’s “My Spy”) in December 2020. (via Deadline).
The plot of “65” is being kept under wraps by Sony and the filmmakers with extreme caution. For the time being, all we have on hand is this official logline from the project’s Variety Insight page: “An astronaut crashes lands on a strange world and discovers he isn’t alone.”
This, combined with the film’s classification as a “science fiction thriller,” might open up a slew of intriguing options. “65” might be another high-octane, wide-appeal blockbuster thriller if Beck and Woods aim to return to their “A Quiet Place” wheelhouse; after all, they’ve proven that they know how to keep an audience on their toes with sparse dramatic ingredients. But, based on Beck and Woods’ previous work as filmmakers, “65” might just as easily be a weirder, more complex, more twisted genre exercise along the lines of “Haunt” or their “50 States of Fright” part “Almost There (Iowa).”
In an interview with Inverse, composer Danny Elfman, who is composing the film’s score, promised that it will be “a fairly wild piece of fantasy,” so whatever Beck and Woods have in store for us, we’re ready for it to set our hearts and thoughts racing.
