According to Argentine news outlet Rumbos, series co-creator Sebastián Ortega has already promised a fourth instalment of the series “El marginal: Season 4” in 2021, with ex-cop Miguel Palacios (Juan Minujn) at the center of the enormous, Byzantine narrative.
Fans of Season 1 will recall that the show began with the story of Palacios, who was imprisoned for a double homicide and forced by a corrupt court to enter prison gangs in order to save his daughter who is kidnapped by the grips of a brutal gang. It was a chance for Palacios to prove himself worthy of his freedom. San Onofre, however, was a perilous mission even for an ex-cop. Palacios struggled to negotiate the decaying jail yard commanded by the ruthless mafia lord Borges, adopting the moniker Pastor Pea.
El Marginal III, as this season was dubbed in Argentina, aired its final episode on August 27. Season 4 will begin production in January and February, according to a show producer, but there are already some hints about the storyline slipping out.
Surprisingly, there have been speculations of an El Marginal spin-off series focused on Borges’ younger brother Diosito, who was originally presented in Season 2’s prequel tale, which takes place three years before the initial season. Fans who are ready to know what happens next were angered by the decision, but comments from series star Martina Gusmán (Emma) imply that the time-traveling series will eventually catch up to itself in Season 4.
Her character, Pena, will be reunited with her love interest, she told reporters.
El Marginal first aired on Netflix in 2017, but it has been winning honors for its cinematic depiction of Argentinian jail life since its 2016 premiere, including the domestic Golden Martin Fierro and Tato awards, as well as a Spanish Platino Award for best television series. The program recreates the packed cell blocks and tent-city jail yard of San Onofre using the ruins of a decommissioned Buenos Aires prison called Cárcel de Caseros. Excessive brutality and glorification of organized crime have also been questioned in the show.
El Marginal’s future seasons were feared to be jeopardized by the unpredictability of the Spanish-language television market. Underground Producciones, which produces the show for Argentinian public television, was recently acquired by Telemundo, a Spanish-language conglomerate, and Ortega has joined the worldwide studio’s development and creativity team.
NBCUniversal, which owns Telemundo, is planning its own big push into streaming for 2020 with Peacock, a platform that will compete with Netflix. While the fourth season of El Marginal appears to be a foregone conclusion, it’s unclear where American consumers will watch it.
