Contrary To Speculation, The New Red Sonja Film Is Still On, And Tasha Huo Is Onboard To Write

Sword and sorcery film Red Sonja first released in 1985, and Richard Fleischer directed it. This Dutch-American film is full of action and fantasy and tells the story of the fierce warrior Sonja who, after being raped by the Queen’s soldier due to her refusal to be their consort, receives special powers from the Goddess Scathach and uses them to avenge herself. The film is based on comics of the same name by Barry Windsor-Smith and Roy Thomas.

Why the film is taking so long

The new Red Sonja film was revealed to be in the works a few years ago, but there was no news of the project as of late. Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we now know that the film is still in its development stages and is not a dead project. In 2019, director Bryan Singer was removed from the film due to sexual harassment allegations, and Millennium later began working with Joey Soloway for the same. Although initially, it was Solloway who was supposed to write and produce the film as well, it is now revealed that Tomb Raider showrunner Tasha Huo will be writing the movie.

The director himself is a fan of Red Sonja

Solloway is excited to collaborate with Huo for this project, and he loves Red Sonja’s character just as much as any other fan. In some interviews he has even compared her to the Dark Knight, a.k.a Batman’s likes, as she is such a fierce female warrior. Roy Thomas first created Red Sonja for Marvel Comics in 1973, and in the 1985 film, the character of Red Sonja was played by actress Brigitte Nielsen (Mercenaries, 2014)
