An American thriller film, “Alice” is inspired by a true story pulled from not only the twisted fantasy of enslaved people in the 1970s but also from throughout America. Krystin Ver Linden last worked as a director in a Hawk and as a writer in Ashe and Love In Vain, is now working as both director and the writer for this film. The titular character Alice is played by Keke Palmer.
Keke Palmer is joined by Jonny Lee Miller, Common, Gaius Charles, and Alicia Witt. The film depicts Alice’s journey through the post-Civil Rights Era American South and explores how she and her family have been beaten and exploited by her master.
Set on a 19th-century plantation in Georgia, the film features Alice, a Black woman among the enslaved people living in antebellum Georgia under the owner Paul Bennett (Johnny Lee Miller). Born and raised on a Georgia plantation, she was only taught how to read by her evil master Paul so that she could read to him.
She, her family, and her friends were brutally beaten and exploited for generations by Paul, and he raped even her. She kept yearning for freedom from his evil master. After marriage to Joseph (Gaius Charles), she with her husband wants to run away though she has never gone far away beyond the boundaries of the Bennet place. But the things would not happen they planned.
Joseph is caught while attempting to leave the plantation, but Alice still tries to fly away independently. She fights with Paul making him blind in one eye and running away through the woods to the Georgia highway. Suddenly, she faints in front of a truck, and its driver Frank (Common) takes her to a hospital, assuming she is suffering from a concussion, but as he realizes that the authority is going to institutionalize her, he brings Alice back to his home.
The twist is that Alice discovers a shocking reality in Frank’s apartment that it’s 1973 year, and she is in an entirely different world. She soon learns that she has been liberalized for a century and reveals the lies that have kept her enslaved.
