The Orbital Children is a new original anime series due to premiere on Netflix in January, has been revealed. The trailer is part of a slew of new anime programming launched by the streaming service this week, including Gundam, Aggretsuko, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and YuYu Hakusho. The Orbital Children is set in the year 2045 when space travel is commonplace and a hotel is built to shelter underage children who were not born on Earth.
The trailer shows off everything you’d expect from a future setting: abstract animals, robots, technology in your palm of your hand, and a glimpse into future society (to no one’s surprise, social media and propaganda have made their way into the outer space hotel). The phrase “you can’t escape the future” implies that the joyful imagery may be concealing some grim secrets, as in many dystopian stories.
Mitsuo Iso, who has worked on projects like Kill Bill, Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, and Digimon Adventure in the animation department, is the creator of The Orbital Children.
He also created, wrote, and directed Coil – A Circle of Children, a film set in the near future that he directed in 2007. In the storey, society was just beginning to grasp virtual reality’s complexities. Mitsuo uses a near-future setting to critique our way of life once again in The Orbital Children.
Kenichi Yoshida and Toshiyuki Inoue created the character design and principal animation for The Orbital Children, respectively. Kenichi worked on Attack on Titan, Cowboy Bebop (2001), and Whisper of the Heart (Studio Ghibli). Toshiyuki collaborated with Mitsuo on Coil – A Circle of Children and worked as an animator on Paprika, Steamboy, and the cyberpunk masterpiece Akira. So, with these three creators, there’s plenty of dystopic labour to go around, and we won’t have to wait long to see what they come up with together.
