Freddie Prinze Jr. blames the Saw franchise for turning his horror movie I Know What You Did into a comedy Last Summer. The slasher genre has a tradition of escalating gore. And what might seem scary to one generation can be dull or even funny to the next generation. In an interview with Collider, the actor explained that a legendary type of of fiction should not age, instead it should inspire the next generation so that it doesn’t die with its audience.

He also expressed his thoughts about how a new type of “ultra-gory” slasher horror represented by James Wan’s Saw franchise “changed the whole game” and made his movie a comedy in comparison. I Know What You Did, Last Summer created suspense and terror among audiences due to the hidden identity of the serial killer. On the other hand, the Saw movies dealt with how the murders were committed by the Jigsaw Killer, through a number of barbarous traps and riddles that disjointed the victims in horrifying ways.

Even with upgrades it is not enough:
Although with each new instalment, both the horror franchises kept changing and improving the pre-established formula of terror, the fans occasionally seemed onboard with it but sometimes the changes were condemned as being unworthy of the original movies. Nevertheless, Freddie Prinze Jr. thinks this sort of rebooting of the popular franchises is how Hollywood works.
