A Time to Kill sequel is officially happening at HBO Max. HBO has attained the rights of the John Grisham novel, A Time for Mercy.
It is a sequel to his book A Time to Kill. Matthew McConaughey will also reprise his role as defense lawyer Jake Brigance. The original series was released 25 years ago, in 1996. The set for A Time to Kill was in Clanton, Mississippi. The story was Mathew McConaughey defended a Black man who was accused of the murder of two white men who sexually abused her 10-year-old daughter. Matthew’s character Jake Brigance argued for the defendant’s release, and racial tension grew in the area.

The novel A Time to Kill by Grisham was a hit. So, the director Joel Schumacher and writer Akiva Goldsman adapted it as a movie. Alongside McConaughey, the movie also starred Charles S. Dutton, Kevin Spacey, Oliver Platt, Kiefer Sutherland, Brenda Fricker, Ashley Judd, etc. The film gained immense critical acclaim and was a hit at the box office. McConaughey also won the Best Breakthrough Performance award. Grisham also brought back Jake Brigance in his other novel Sycamore Road in 2013. The character also appears in Grisham’s other book, A Time for Mercy which is the sequel of A Time to Kill. McConaughey wanted to have his role as Jake Brigance after hearing about the new adaptation.

About A Time for Mercy
This story is after five years of A Time to Kill. Here, Jake Brigance got the case of a young man who shot his mother’s boyfriend. He claimed that he did it for self-defense and only shot his father to save his mother, sister, himself from further abuse. Jake decided to represent the boy draws tremendous anger from the locals. HBO and Warner Bros. haven’t comment about when the production will start. At this time, McConaughey is the only star who is currently attached to the series. The series will have 8-10 episodes.
