As an HBO Asia Original, WarnerMedia will premiere the documentary series “Traffickers: Inside The Golden Triangle.” It will premiere on regional streaming service HBO GO in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan on July 23, 2021, and will explore the mysterious heart of Asia’s illicit drug production.
The series recounts the rise and fall of three notorious drug lords in Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, known as ‘the Opium King,’ ‘The Mekong River Pirate,’ and ‘The Playboy Drug Lord.’
Exclusive interviews with drug lords’ inner circles, law enforcement agencies, and victims’ families, as well as archive material and immersive recreations, are included in the episode.
The series was shot on-site in the so-called ‘Golden Triangle’ region, which borders Thailand, Burma, and China, as well as the United States, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Australia, in English, Thai, Burmese, and Lao. The series is produced by IFA Media and directed by Robbie Bridgeman, Steve Chao, and John Lam, with Dean Johnson serving as executive producer.
“The Mekong massacre was one of the greatest massacres of Chinese people outside China since World War II,” notes journalist Jeff Howe.
And it was the assassination of 13 sailors onboard two cargo ships on October 5, 2011, that reawakened the world’s attention to the Golden Triangle, a notoriously violent region, and catapulted Myanmar’s elusive freshwater pirate, Naw Kham, into the spotlight.
The area, dubbed “a narco-state,” spans 950,000 square kilometers (370,000 square miles) and includes the junction of the Mekong and Ruak rivers, as well as Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. The territory continues to be the greatest “traffickers’ haven.” It’s long been a hub for drug trafficking, and Howe is featured in HBO Asia’s new true-crime documentary series, Traffickers: Inside the Golden Triangle. Former special agents, police commanders, advisers to drug barons, fellow reporters, and unlikely advocates of some violent public foes subsequently caught provide their perspectives.
Today, the “deadly tendrils,” as the series calls them, spread further than ever, ensuring that the Golden Triangle remains “unquestionably the hub of illicit drug production,” with the added benefit of a pandemic and politics. Whatever hazy ideas its name may conjure up, this is not the mythologized hippy dreamland of the 1960s, but rather “the wildest, most lawless, the most scary-ass location you could ever visit,” according to Howe.
After the award-winning “The World Behind The Teenage Psychic” and “The Talwars: Behind Closed Doors,” “Traffickers” is the third HBO Asia Original documentary. HBO GO is accessible in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand, where HBO Max has yet to be launched.
