Executive producers are Jeremy Stein, Jake Wagner, and Jake Weiner. The film will be produced by Netflix and Paramount Players, a new subsidiary of Paramount Pictures that focuses on modern genre films from newer directors. The picture was not initially publicized as being available on Netflix, but it appears that the streaming service has discreetly bought the rights to it, as shown in Production Weekly issue 1242.
Alex Hardcastle (Grace and Frankie, Love, Simon) is directing, while Brandon Scott Jones is penning the screenplay, which is based on a spec film by Andrew Knauer and Arthur Pielli. For the first time, Hardcastle, who is known for directing episodes of the TV shows Parks and Recreation, Grace and Frankie, and The Office, will be directing a feature picture.
The plot summary is as follows:
The protagonist of this comedy set in 1997 is Ruby, the most popular girl in her high school. She’s the cheerleading team captain, she’s dating the quarterback, and she’s on her way to becoming prom queen. Girls aspire to be like her, and men aspire to be with her. She seemed to have it all, until she collapses from the top of the cheerleading pyramid and enters a coma. Ruby finally wakes up as a 37-year-old woman, 20 years after she went into a coma. She returns to her high school and attempts to reclaim her position as the school’s star. Most importantly, she is still hell-bent on being prom queen.
Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect, Jojo Rabbit) will play Ruby, the main character in Senior Year. Wilson returns to acting in Senior Year after taking a hiatus from acting in 2020 and losing 60 pounds.
