Madoka Magica is one of those shows that reveals a grim story beneath its shiny veneer. Gen Urobuchi is best known for his gory stories, which are the polar opposite of the magical girl genre. When Madoka Magica originally aired in 2010, a large portion of the public realized that the show was far from dainty and “kawaii.”
The release of the Rebellion film in 2013 was quickly followed by a claim that a sequel was in the works. Many fans were more than happy to wait the necessary two years for the following installment. However, no one had anticipated such a lengthy break.
Madoka Magica, a dark take on the cutesy magical girl genre, startled the anime community in 2011. On April 25th, 2021, during the Madoka Magica franchise’s 10th-anniversary event, the news of a sequel to the 2013 film Rebellion was announced.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten is the title of the film sequel. This does point to a final confrontation between the remaining members of our previous characters and the infamous Walpurgisnacht. It may also assist in the resolution of some fan theories while refuting others.
What is the story of Madoka Magica?
Madoka Kaname, fourteen, has a bizarre dream involving a strange creature and a girl in distress. The next day, a mysterious girl called Homura Akemi transfers into Madoka’s class; to Madoka’s surprise, Homura looks exactly like the girl she saw in her dream.
Madoka hears a plea for aid in her head later that day. The cries turn out to be those of a wounded Kyuubey, the cat-like creature she saw in her dream. But she finds Homura at Kyuubey’s location, who warns Madoka to get away from the small entity. Madoka, realizing that her new classmate had attacked the helpless creature, snatches Kyuubey and flees with the assistance of her best friend, Sayaka Miki.
Kyuubey offers the girls an enticing chance after their escape: they can become magical girls in exchange for having any wish granted. Not everything seems to be as it appears, however, as the weight of their desires may be far greater than they expected.
A cryptic teaser foreshadows a haunting story
ANIPLEX released a 33-second trailer for the upcoming movie on the day of the announcement. A shattered reflection of a smiling Madoka is shown in the trailer, which is intersected by flashing credits. A piece of haunting choral music accompanies this unsettling image. Given the franchise’s history of tragedy, we may anticipate yet another wave of angst for this movie.
Many of the original anime franchise’s staff will be engaged in the future feature, according to the trailer. This comprises Akiyuki Shinbo, the main director, and Gen Urobuchi, the scriptwriter. This movie will be produced by the original studio, Studio Shaft.
The artwork released by the makers has the protagonist, Madoka Kaname, in her pink gear, oozing innocence as always. If you look away from her and sideways, you’ll notice cracked glass in the backdrop of the poster. From the other side, a creepy hand reaches out to Madoka. Expect the movie to deliver on its promises of twists and turns.
Movie sequel to Rebellion (2013)
Madoka Magica isn’t your average magical girl anime with sparkles and good triumphing over evil. Instead, it’s more of a psychological thriller that explores emotional trauma.
The Madoka Magica series became well-known in the anime world as a result of its subversion. The third film in the Madoka Magica series, Rebellion, was released in 2013. The newly announced project will be a follow-up to the almost 9-year-old movie.
The anime community is excited about the new film’s release, given the long hiatus.
When is Madoka Magica’s 4th movie being released?
While the date of release has yet to be determined, we’re hoping it won’t be too long—at least not another 8 years.
