There are a lot of fans of H.P. Lovecraft who waited for his horror to hit. And because we can never let you down, we have prepared a video that you will both enjoy and despise! Hello everyone, and welcome back to a very exciting and long-awaited Marvellous Video. Today’s video is for all of you Lovecraftian aficionados out there, as well as gamers. What better way to have a gaming experience than to include Lovecraftian villains?
Today, we are bringing you all you need to know about your favorite villains from From Software’s 2015 horrific masterpiece Bloodborne. Just as in Lovecraft’s works, there is always something lurking or hidden outside our gaze that would drive normal people nuts if they discovered it. Throughout the game, several groups investigate this information, and guess what? They all have quite different ideas about how to develop people to the next level of life.
Bloodborne is a Lovecraftian narrative about humans experimenting with forbidden knowledge that works wonderfully as a Lovecraftian story. At first glance, it appears to be a simple disease that turns the villagers into vicious creatures. You follow them around the city until you reach Byrgenwerth. That is when the story takes an unexpected turn. Stranger monsters including a large centipede-scorpion hybrid, a human fly with a bulbous head covered in eyeballs, and students who appear to be melting into a pool of goo can be discovered here.
So, in this video, we will go through the backstories and other details of the top 9 Lovecraftian villains from Bloodborne that you have been dying to learn about. Buckle up, because this is going to be an exciting ride.
Brainsucker
The Chalice Dungeon boss, first up on the list we have Brainsucker. With a face full of tentacles and a squid-like head, this Brainsuckers sort of depict students who have eldritch knowledge but they probably went too far in learning the mysteries of the Great Ones and as a result of that, they suffered bodily alteration and transformation. It is a humanoid monster with a pale-blueish appearance, a thin body, and extremely long limbs who wears filthy robes and an amulet. You would be surprised by its weak look because it is capable of running at a shocking speed and it attacks with deadly swipes and punches.
The Brainsucker is known for its ruthless grab attack. A direct hit of this level directly results in the loss of two points of Insight. Now, if they happen to capture a hunter, they will launch a massive, spiky tentacle attack, which comes out from its head.
That tentacle will dismember the hunter’s head and then they will suck their brain and thoughts. Yeah, literally suck out all of the thoughts. Well, they probably do this because they are still trying to ascend to become Great Ones. They also look like the mind flayer, a Dungeons & Dragons creature that kills by wrapping its tentacles around the victim’s skull and drains their psychic life force.
They are Kin, so of course, when you kill them, their blood will be greyish and not the typical red. To top that all off, Brainsucker actually has 2 variants, hooded and non-hooded. So, the hooded version is like the elite version. They are able to cast magic attacks that paralyze the player. And their hood comes off when they use their grab attack that drains Insight. They are also the only enemy that can drop the Shaman Bone Blade. Because of their hollow eyes, it is possible that they worship Oedon which could be taken from “Oedipus” (self-inflicted removal of the eye).
Winter Lantern
A combination of deadly, frightening, and scary monsters! The Winter Lanterns are an obvious pick for Bloodborne’s most bizarre enemy. They are hideous horrific monsters with bulbous heads. It has a humanoid body with two arms and two legs, and its head is like a huge mass of flesh with eyeballs all over. But when you look close enough, you will realize that they are actually created from the corpses of the Messengers in the game. They might have some connection with the Doll Set in Hunter’s Dream because they wear kind of a shabby and bloody version of it with a long skirt and sleeves.
Their stare produces a quick buildup of Frenzy, and they are capable of grabbing the player and giving a terrible bite with their lengthy tentacles that are dangling from their heads. They can be spotted by their creepy humming. They will also glow orange and light the nearby region, when they sense any evidence of a player’s presence, whether through their footsteps or by some sound that they made.
This enemy is by far the most freaky. They are first met in the Nightmare of Mensis and afterward in the Nightmare Realm. There are some similarities between Winter Lantern and Brain of Mensis. Firstly, its head and the arms it uses for the grab attack look very much like the Brain of Mensis. They also give Frenzy after spotting a hunter, which is exactly what Brain of Mensis does.
Now, another exciting thing about them is that, in the Japanese version, they are called Hozuki in Japan, Winter Lantern is the name of a plant and its seeds are used as presents to lead the souls of the dead during the Bon Festival in Japan. The fruit of the Winter Lantern is also used as a meal as well as a sedative.
Orphan of Kos
Now let us look at a rather interesting story about the newly born Great One. So, the Byrgenwerth scholars along with the hunters came to the small town of Hamlet looking for the eldritch truth since Hamlet had a deep link with the great ones. So, they killed and tortured the people of the town expecting to discover the truth from the brains of the villagers, thinking them to be lined with the eyes.
Now, the suffering villagers begged for the wrath of Mother Kos, and then a curse was placed on the Hunters of Byrgenwerth and all of their descendants. This curse clearly reflected itself in the shape of Hunter’s Nightmare, a horrible dream world where anyone who has become filled with blood-lust is doomed to hunt and murder for all eternity. Now, the only way to lift this curse was by revealing the truth about these sins. People like Simon the Harrowed wanted to break the curse, but there were others like Lady Maria and Brador, who thought that the secret must be kept hidden as a punishment.
So, on the upper level of Hunter’s Nightmare, a collapsing duplicate of Hamlet has been maintained in time by the dream and it is filled with a horrific fish-creature version of the people who once lived there. And we find the Great One Kos’s washed-up corpse on the town’s beach. When the Hunter finds this, the Orphan of Kos comes out of the body, born from its dead mother, and after seeing the dark sun sky of Hunter’s Nightmare, it begins to cry at its state.
When the Hunter comes too close, it goes insane and attacks the Hunter. Now, after the Orphan is murdered, a little black phantom appears over Kos’s body. When the Hunter kills this phantom, the phantom’s hazy form fades, and the mist returns to the ocean. The Hunter’s Nightmare’s dark moon suddenly goes away and then appears as a peaceful and calm sunset over the horizon.
Ludwig
Ludwig is a main enemy and boss in the Bloodborne DLC The Old Hunters. Ludwig was one of the Healing Church’s first official hunters, following in the footsteps of Gehrman and Lady Maria in the Church’s name. He also had opponents who seemed to disagree with his techniques and disliked his hunts. These opponents referred to Ludwig as a “beast-possessed degenerate”. He transformed into a monster.
The kind of beastly form he had, was proof that he was involved in experimental forms of old blood. And after death, he was sent to Hunter’s Nightmare due to his thirst for blood where he has stayed ever since. The player meets Ludwig at the end of a bloody path lined with corpses, with Ludwig focused on murdering them. He tried to regain some sort of human right in the middle of the battle as he stares at the Holy Moonlight Sword and then continues to fight.
Ludwig is left beheaded after the player beats him. Now, if a hunter approaches him while being dressed as a regular hunter, he asks them whether they have seen “the thread of light”. But if the player goes up to him in the Healing Church clothes, he wants to know whether the Church Hunters fulfilled their noble mission. If the player says no, he becomes devastated and howls. But if they say yes, he feels glad that his sacrifices were not useless and falls asleep, leaving the Holy Moonlight Sword for the player.
Well, on the other hand, if the player does not kill Ludwig, Simon the Harrowed comes and shoots the beast through the eye with an arrow, putting the beast to rest. So, when the Hunter kills the Orphan of Kos and breaks the curse, Ludwig will then most likely be put to rest.
The One Reborn
Next up on the list, we have a not-so-major boss in Bloodborne. It is possible that the One Reborn was created by the School of Mensis with the goal of bringing mankind to the level of the Great Ones. It seems like the creature is made up of multiple bones and body tissue. Now, because of the lack of civilization in Yahar’gul, it is possible that the whole population was cursed by an unholy Pthumenria ritual which then combined all of them together to create the One Reborn.
Now when the Hunter conducts some sort of ritual there, six Bell-ringing women ring their bells to summon the One Reborn through a portal in the sky that covers the Moon. Now, if the player does not take out the bell ringers before facing the One Reborn, it will definitely shoot fireballs at the player. And when any of the bell ringers ring their bell, the One Reborn gets a temporary boost in power.
The giant humanoid figure just on top of its “head” can perform arcane magic spells at the player, such as homing red orbs or a massive frustrating gibberish-sounding scream that triggers a huge explosion in the surroundings as a result. Well, from the looks of it, it does look pretty annoying all the time. When the One Reborn loses a third of its health, it begins its second phase, in which it gets more aggressive.
It then gains the power of a new attack in which it creates a massive cloud of body parts and rains them all over the arena. Now, when the One Reborn is defeated, it drops three Yellow Backbones. Along with that if there are any remaining bell ringers, they will automatically vanish, and the door to the Lecture Building will open.
Bloodlicker
These nasty crawlies live on the edges of Cainhurst Castle, waiting for the unlucky hunters to feast on them. And this creature is none other than Bloodlicker. Even though they have a super-thin body, they have enormous, bloated, and transparent stomach pouches which appear to be filled with blood. What is surprising is that the size of this pouch can differ from quite big, or pretty small as well. They also appear to have an abnormally huge tongue that they use to strike the player.
This enemy from Bloodborne has four variants of Bloodlickers based on the size of the pouch. Starved, Hungry, Fat, and Bloated. That kind of sounds very lifelike, doesn’t it?
Now, the most deadly of them all is the Starved variant. They can only be discovered in the Chalice Dungeons after delivering a Visceral Attack on an enemy and then returning to the area. Their belly is very tiny but the size is quite large, which is why they are the most lethal. But, as everyone can already guess from their name, they are starving and they would rather consume the blood directly and continuously instead of going after the prey.
The Hungry Bloodlickers are found in the Cainhurst zone and wander the area around the Lamp. Cainhurst Bloodlickers who wander the area around the Lamp. They are extremely dangerous, and if players are not careful enough to spot them in their surroundings, they will end up attracting the attention of other Bloodlickers and the Hungry Bloodlickers will most likely cost them their lives.
Now, the Fat Bloodlickers are not as deadly as the others. They are found in Hunter’s Nightmare feeding on the blood river. And as they are of course fat, their mobility is less so they won’t go running after the players. But to cover that loss, they will fling extra blood which they have absorbed at their prey in order to harm and inflict Slow Poison on them.
The one that is the least trouble is definitely the Bloated one. They can be discovered lapping up the blood at Cainhurst’s gates along with other still Hungry Bloodlickers. Because of their massive size, they are completely harmless and will not react, probably because they can’t do it in the first place.
Rom
Next on the list, we have a boss and a Kin from Bloodborne and she is known as Rom, the Vacuous Spider. Now, don’t just go by the name, the looks can be quite deceiving. Rom looks more like a giant pillbug than a spider. She possesses a silverfish-like tail and an enormous body from which plant-like appendages which resemble Coldblood Flowers seem to emerge. Her face is covered with eyeballs, like so many others and it also looks similar to a piece of pumice, which implies its link to the Great Ones.
Rom will stay non-hostile unless disturbed, at which point she will defend herself with strong powerful Arcane strikes. Rom is also accompanied by beings who are known as the Children of Rom. They have the same shaped head as actual spiders and they also seem to have bladed legs. These spiders might be Rom’s actual offspring, or they could have just been made to guard the creature.
Rom, the Vacuous Spider, is actually in charge of the barrier that stops regular humans from recognizing the terrible horrors that surround them, such as the Lesser Amygdalae creeping throughout Cathedral Ward. Rom used to be a Byrgenwerth scholar who, at some time, went through metamorphosis into a Kin courtesy of Kos. It is evident based on the dialogue given by Micolash, Host of the Nightmare.
Amygdala
In Bloodborne, Amygdala is Great Ones. In the Nightmare Frontier, one emerges as a boss in Amygdala’s Chamber. Meanwhile, non-playable people fill numerous places throughout the game, occasionally functioning as modes of transportation between regions. Amygdala can also be found as Chalice Dungeon bosses in the Cursed Pthumerian Defilement, Lower Loran, and Isz Gravestone.
They are the most horrific beings with spider-like bodies, a short tail, and a head that is extremely similar to a region in the brain called the Amygdaloid, which processes emotions that are usually related to fear. Well, that definitely describes why it has this name. When Amygdala utilizes arcane strikes, its multiple bulbous eyeballs expand outwards. They have seven arms with six-fingered hands and two legs with reptile talons. Yeah, that definitely is freaky. Oh, and many of them also have tendrils on their faces.
As the Great Ones, Amygdala is the most well-known of its kind. This fact is visible through the countless statues of them that line the Cathedral Ward and Yahar’gul, Unseen Village. A considerably bigger statue, that looks like it is part of a shrine, can also be seen in the church of the Hypogean Gaol. The world is apparently filled with the Amygdala, which lives on the edges of different enormous structures. Amygdala’s Chamber is a location in the Nightmare Frontier where one Amygdala lives.
This Amygdala has one extremely devoted and most sincere of all the followers. It is Patches the Spider. It offers sacrifices to his “God” through the use of the Tonsil Stone, which transports them into the Nightmare Frontier. But the surprising thing is that when the Hunter killed the Amygdala, Patches the Spider did not show any sorrow or anger. The only thing it felt was that they “bestowed salvation” upon the creature.
Fluorescent Flower
This exoskeleton monster only emerges beyond the grounds of Byrgenwerth, making him one of Bloodborne’s most mysterious enemies. Fluorescent Flowers are huge centipede-like predators with multiple chitinous limbs and a massive vertical maw full of fangs. Its head includes several bioluminescent tendrils and a luminous flower-like nodule on top, which is similar to that of an anglerfish. It probably might be a sensory organ.
Its body is filled with grey fluid, not crimson blood, like the Crawlers’, are, which kind of implies that this monster is from another realm. And also, when they die, some of them do not even vanish but they just sort of collapse into a small dimensional vortex.
They have a really thick and strong exoskeleton which protects them from physical as well as energy attacks. Along with it they can also release Arcane fireballs, spray acid, and easily destroy their victims with their teeth and claws. They might very well appear to be primitive lifeforms, but they are Kin, which means they were once humans. Although their bodies had already lost all human features and now show a good mix of arthropodal and plant/fungal character traits. It is similar to Rom, the Vacuous Spider, which suggests that either they ascended in a similar manner or that they were simply used as lab rats in order to perfect the awakening of Rom.
The key to landing a hit on this enemy with a good level of damage is by striking it on the top of its head. A little cosmos appears around a Fluorescent Flower every time that it launches its fireball attack. The vertical, tooth-filled mouth that they have around the neck is kind of similar to that of the ‘Gaping Dragon’ from the game’s spiritual and studio predecessor Dark Souls. They also emit Arcane Haze from the flower-like tip of their bodies.
