Here’s all you need to know about Spiderhead, a new science fiction film with a star-studded ensemble. The Netflix version is based on George Saunders’ dystopian short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” which was published in The New Yorker in 2010. According to a recent source, numerous A-list actors have committed to the project.

In 2020, Netflix will release a number of critically regarded adaptations. The Old Guard, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, is based on Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández’s eponymous comic, while I’m Thinking of Ending Things, directed by Charlie Kaufman, is based on Iain Reid’s 2016 novel of the same name. Following that, Netflix released the adaptations of The Devil All the Time and The Boys in the Band, both of which were based on Donald Ray Pollock and Mart Crowley’s original works.

Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski will direct Netflix’s Spiderhead adaptation, according to a September 2020 rumor. TRON: Legacy, Oblivion, and Only the Brave are among Kosinkski’s previous action flicks. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who previously worked on the scripts for Deadpool and Zombieland, as well as the 2019 Netflix movie 6 Underground, will write Spiderhead.

Spiderhead has yet to be given a release date by Netflix, although it is expected to be several years away. Chris Hemsworth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has committed to the project, which is one of several significant projects to which he is currently linked. Hemsworth will resume his role as Thor in the MCU Phase 4 feature Thor: Love and Thunder (due out in February 2022), and he’s also scheduled to star in a biopic on legendary professional wrestler Terry Bollea aka Hulk Hogan. Hemsworth has also joined the cast of the Netflix sequel Extraction 2. Spiderhead is set to debut in 2023, while Netflix may opt for a 2022 release.

Hemsworth leads the Spiderhead ensemble in an unspecified capacity, though he’ll most likely play Jeff, the story’s narrator. Hemsworth recently played as Agent H in Men in Black: International and will reprise his role as Thor in the animated Disney+ series What If…?

Jurnee Smollett will co-star in Spiderhead, likely as Heather or Rachel, one of Jeff’s love interests. The American actress made her breakthrough in the 1997 film Eve’s Bayou and presently starring in Lovecraft Country as Letitia “Leti” Lewis. Smollett recently appeared in the WGN programs Underground as Rosalee and Birds of Prey as Dinah Lance/Black Canary.

Miles Teller has also been cast in Spiderhead and will play Ray Abnesti, a pharmaceutical genius. Teller is most recognized in mainstream culture for his roles as Peter in the Divergent trilogy and Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four. Teller also played Andrew in Whiplash and Sutter in The Spectacular Now. In the Amazon Prime series Too Old to Die, Young, he played Martin Jones, and in Top Gun: Maverick, he plays Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw.

Spiderhead has yet to get an official synopsis from Netflix, but the plot is expected to be faithful to the original material. Convicts can reduce their sentences in a dystopian future by volunteering as medical subjects. Spiderhead will ostensibly follow two inmates who have flashbacks after using mood-altering medications.
