It appears that running a network would be impossible without some sort of cooking competition. At least, that way of thinking appears to have inspired PBS and Virginia Public Media (VPM), which will launch “The Great American Recipe,” a cooking competition show, this summer.
The show had little more than a title and a press release packed with platitudes about expressing the complex nature of America’s identity when it was unveiled in August. One of the judges, Graham Elliot, remarked at the time, “We each have various histories and experiences that will bring different perspectives to cooking styles from around the country in this fascinating new series for PBS.”
However, in recent days, a follow-up press release with significantly more information was released. Specifically, we now know when the show will air this summer and have a better notion of what “The Great American Recipe” will entail, including what it will be about and who will feature on it.
In a recent news release from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, we were given a more specific date for The Great American Recipe than “summer 2022.” Friday, on June 24 at 9 p.m. EST, the show will premiere. Then, every Friday until August 12, hour-long episodes will air.
The programme is available on your local PBS station, as well as on the PBS app and PBS.org. The distinction between PBS co-producing a cooking show and a competition produced for Netflix or Discovery+ is that you don’t need a subscription to view it while it’s airing. If it were to be a permanent part of the PBS app’s video collection, you might have to become a member to watch it later.
For most individuals, this is unlikely to be an issue, as the desire to revisit a cooking competition series may not be as great as, say, rewatching your favorite sitcom. Potential fans can console themselves by knowing that being a paying PBS subscriber also grants access to a slew of other content, including PBS’s “Masterpiece” archive.
The cast of “The Great American Recipe” will include a who’s who of the culinary industry. According to the press announcement, Alejandra Ramos, a food writer who appears frequently on “The Today Show,” will host the show.
Leah Cohen, Tiffany Derry, and Graham Elliot are the judges. Cohen is the owner and operator of Pig and Khao and was a contestant on Season 5 of “Top Chef.” Derry also owns and operates Roots Southern Table. She also participated on “Top Chef,” where she rose to the top of the ratings in Season 7. Elliot, a judge on “MasterChef” and “Top Chef” as well as a successful restaurateur, continues the theme.
The contestants, on the other hand, appear to have been kept in the dark by the show. We know they’ll come from all around the country, but we don’t know how many or whether they’ll be eliminated episode by episode or kept together until the conclusion. What is evident, though, is that the show intends to emphasise the various traditions of American cuisine. “As a chef of Filipino and Romanian-Jewish background, I’ve always loved to create dishes that combine different influences, and I’m happy to be a part of a unique series that will promote the amazing diversity of our nation’s food,” Cohen said in a statement.
“The Great American Recipe,” as previously stated, is a public broadcasting competition that aims to highlight the diversity of American cuisine. In a press release, VPM’s chief content officer, Steve Humble, said, “Each contestant’s regional and ethnic cuisine showcases the myriad flavours that make up the melting pot of our great nation.
But what does this entail in terms of the show? Well, it appears that the emphasis is on the tales that go into the meals rather than on the competition. It’s unclear whether this implies contestants will be required to prepare foods from various American regions or if the challenges will be influenced by each contestant’s heritage. What we do know is that the winner’s dish will be featured on the cover of “The Great American Recipe Volume,” a cookbook that includes recipes from all of the contestants
However, there is some tiny print in this last section. According to Reality Blurred, “sharing” recipes gives PBS the rights to those recipes without acknowledgment or remuneration. They quote the show’s casting application as saying, “You acknowledge that you will not be compensated, nor receive any fees, payments, consideration, or recompense of any sort for the Material, the use of your Name and Likeness, or any rights granted to PBS and/or any Sublicensees herein.” Steve Humble claimed in a subsequent press tour that the contract language had “absolutely” modified and that PBS would only licence the recipes. Maybe it was just a standard reality TV contract. We’ll have to wait and see.
