While news about Blumhouse’s Spawn franchise remake has been scarce for some time, special effects make-up artist and co-founder of KNB EFX Group Greg Nicotero took the opportunity at San Diego Comic-Con to give an update on some of the things he’s been working on for the upcoming film.
Greg Nicotero, whose company was part of the FX crew on Suicide Squad, told ComicBook.com that Todd McFarlane is “extremely passionate” about moving through with the long-stalled film, and that when it eventually arrives, it would be a “hard” R-rated affair.

Nicotero teased the designs he’s been working on for the project when speaking with Brandon Davis. He stated they had ideas, and McFarlane had come in and said, “We’re doing this thing, and it’s going to be low budget, and it’s going to be kind of down and dirty.” And he wants it to feel more like Todd McFarlane’s animated show Spawn, where Spawn meets David Fincher. He was looking for a rough, down-and-dirty project. As a result, they spent a lot of time there developing concepts. They created a number of design busts as well as a great deal of other amazing work. Then it came to a halt.
According to reports, the film is still in the works, with Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner set to feature and Jason Blum producing. McFarlane hinted about the arrival of Spawn in 2020, claiming at the time that it will come “that year.” Despite the fact that the popularity of Joker created a lot of leeway for R-rated superhero and comic book films, the film hasn’t moved since then.
It’s been more than four years since Jason Blum announced that Blumhouse will produce the reboot, with Todd McFarlane penning the screenplay. Despite assurances that “it is coming,” many fans are beginning to question if it will ever be released. With no news on when that elusive perfect script might be available, it appears that we’re still in for a long wait.
