I Am Groot, an animated series from Marvel Studios that will premiere on Disney+ later this year, follows the antics of a little talking tree in a series of short-form movies. I Am Groot, like every other MCU program on the streaming service, first appeared to be exclusive to that platform. The series would also be screened in some cinema theaters, but there is a big catch, it has now been disclosed. According to The Direct, one I Am Groot episode will only be shown at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles (which is owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company).
Marvel Studios has not officially verified any specifics regarding I Am Groot. James Gunn, the creator of Guardians of the Galaxy, has previously stated that the shorts aren’t a part of the bigger “saga” of the Guardians, thus unlike shows like Moon Knight, WandaVision, and Ms. Marvel, the series doesn’t seem to have had much of an impact on the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The only character confirmed to feature in the program so far is Groot, although Drax, another member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, may make an appearance in the shorts according to previously revealed storyboard material. Like several of the other Guardians, Drax already made an appearance in Marvel’s What If?, and it appears that he will also make an appearance in the Groot series of shorts.
What If…? and I Am Groot are the two animated programs produced by Marvel Studios. Marvel Zombies, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, and X-Men ’97 will shortly join them.
