The convoluted timeline in Annabelle Comes Home is less of an ambitious experiment and more of a scenario where the filmmakers needed the actors to be the correct age in order for the tale to make sense.
Not only that, but the producers needed to make sure the Warrens were still famous throughout the events of Annabelle Comes Home, because the plot revolves around their improbable decision to leave their child with a teenage babysitter in a house full of haunted goods. The Warrens are in high demand and are being called out to investigate all sorts of paranormal activities. As a result, Annabelle Comes Home takes place in the centre of the Conjuring franchise’s timeline, between The Conjuring and its sequels.
