A North American cinema debut for the Japanese animated film “The House of the Lost on the Cape,” which was just selected as an official entry at the Annecy festival, will take place on September 7. In cooperation with Anime Expo and Iconic Events Releasing, the movie will be distributed by Los Angeles-based Eleven Arts. In it, two kids who experience a natural calamity and lose their home are taken in by an odd old woman.
New York and Los Angeles is going to be the first city to receive the roll-out before other locations. The award-winning anime film The House of the Lost on the Cape will be available on Blu-ray/DVD and digitally starting on September 27, 2022, according to a statement from Shout! Factory and Eleven Arts.
A Blu-ray/DVD combination pack and a digital download version of the movie, which had its 2021 premiere, will be made available after it has its countrywide theatrical release on September 7, 2022, in some U.S. theatres. The movie’s physical distribution will also include a range of supplementary materials, such as a unique Q&A with director Shinya Kawatsura at the Annecy Festival and an exclusive art booklet. The movie will also be available with English subtitles and Japanese audio.
The House of the Lost on the Cape is based on Sachiko Kashiwaba’s novel, which was published in serial form from May 2014 to July 2015. Following its release, the movie received positive reviews from critics and went on to win the Best Animation Film prize at the 76th Mainichi Film Awards. It was also an official selection in the feature film competition at the 2022 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
“The House of the Lost on the Cape” follows Hiyori, an 8-year-old who lost her family and her voice, and runaway Yui, a 17-year-old. When they encounter Kiwa, a peculiar old woman, they have nowhere to go, according to the movie’s official synopsis. She offers them a room in a Mayoiga, a slightly dilapidated old house with a view of the sea. In spite of joining Kiwa on a whim, the two girls find solace in Kiwa’s kind hospitality and Mayoiga, a fabled home said to look after wandering visitors. Little by little, the broken hearts of both girls start to mend. Up until one day when a number of odd creatures that Kiwa refers to as “Fushigitto” start to appear around the house.
It was written by Yoshida Reiko (“A Silent Voice,” “Violet Evergarden,” “K-On!”) and directed by Kawatsura Shinya (“Non Non Biyori,” “Kokoro Connect,” “Sagrada Reset”) as an adaptation of the acclaimed novel of the same name by Kashiwaba Sachiko. David Production (“Cells at Work!” and the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series) was in charge of the animation. “Cape” earlier this year also took up the 76th Annual Mainichi Picture Awards’ trophy for “best animation film.”
Right Stuf, a well-known online anime shop, has been purchased by Crunchyroll, the anime streaming service owned by the Sony Group. The 35-year-old business also sells toys, collectibles, music, manga novels, and other goods. Through its own label, it also provides a constrained range of officially authorised anime home video items. The agreement’s terms weren’t made public. Sony, which already owned direct rival Funimation, purchased Crunchyroll. RightStuf’s acquisition, according to the business, “aims to give anime enthusiasts and collectors an even greater assortment of items.” Fans complained on the Crunchyroll website about what they see as a developing monopoly by Sony over anime programming and worried about what Sony-Crunchyroll would do to the explicit content that is now available.
