After dealing with non-stop legal battles for years, the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise is now facing another new lawsuit and this time against Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. As fans know, this franchise has struggled with lawsuits, making it impossible to proceed with newer projects. Victor Miller, who wrote the original film’s screenplay, has been in a constant tiff with Sean Cunningham, the director, and producer. It all began with a loophole in the copyright law which lets the creator of any written work repudiate a copyright arrangement thirty-five years after it was initially conceded.
How Cunningham won the first legal battle
When he attempted to make use of this loophole, Miller put forth arguments to reclaim the franchise. Still, Cunningham’s Horror Inc. made it clear that the franchise actually belongs to Miller’s employer and was acquired while it was put up for hire. Although Miller seemed to have the upper hand at one point, tables were turned when Cunningham began to fight to overturn the judgement.

Why Sean is now pointing fingers at Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures
After a prolonged fight over the intellectual property, Horror Inc finally won but now Sean has launched yet another lawsuit and this time he is going up against Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. The legal battle will be fought over the horror franchise’s net profits with Cunningham claiming that the two studios have conveniently and systematically hidden the true amounts of profits they made from the series. The complaint has been lodged with the Los Angeles Superior Court, but neither Warner Bros. nor Paramount Pictures have publicly responded to the claims.
