Directed, written and produced by Rebecca Hall, Passing is a black-and-white drama and also her directorial debut. The film is based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Nella Larsen. The film stars Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga, Andre Holland, Bill Camp, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, and Alexander Skarsgard. The title refers to the African-Americans who had skin color light enough to be considered “white”. This practice was called passing.
The film follows the unexpected union of two high-school friends, and how they become increasingly involved in each other’s lives and insecurities. The reunion sparks a mutual obsession that threatens both their constructed realities.
While Irene (played by Tessa Thompson) identifies as an African-American and has married a black doctor, Clare “passes” as white and has married a rich prejudiced white man. They live on the opposite sides of the color line during the height f the Harlem Renaissance in New York.
Rebecca Hall’s passing is a gripping and profound examination of racial identity. The visuals and performances from all the cast members are near-perfect, and the story is very impressively staged.
