    Where Can I Watch Snakehead?

Written and directed by the multihyphenate Evan Jackson Leong, Snakehead is a reality-based narrative film about a Chinese immigrant who gets caught amidst an international crime ring involving human trafficking as he attempts to build a better life for his family. It explores the personal and collective ramifications of human trafficking.

Having the advantage of a perspective of a sixth-generation Chinese American, Jackson took his cues from the criminal career of Cheng Chui Ping, also known as “Sister Ping”, a trafficker who operated between New York and Hong Kong between the 1980s and the 1990s.

His perspective also enables him to humanize news reports about Asian gang ascendancy in the United States. The biggest challenge perhaps is crafting a relatable protagonist out of a notorious criminal. Jackson is able to capture both the vulnerability and the menace of a woman who finally takes control of her life after decades of victimization. Snakehead is a taut crime drama, that is likely to secure a unique place in contemporary Asian American cinema.
