‘The Power of the Dog’ is an upcoming western drama based on a long-neglected 1967 novel by the American Western writer Thomas Savage. Director Jane Campion has made a superb comeback with feature film directing after a 12-year hiatus.

The drama is used as a weapon to divide and unnerve. “The Power of the Dog” stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a masochistic cattle rancher named Phil Burbank, whose bullying demeanour is drawn from a frontier-worn masculinity and deeply closeted sexuality.
At first glance, Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his brother, George (Jesse Plemons), are a model of sibling functionality, running their ranch in the absence of their city-dwelling parents. Where Phil is calloused and mean, George is gentler and more soft-spoken, often at the mercy of his brother’s teasing.
At a stop at a restaurant, Phil harshly taunts Rose (Kirsten Dunst), a widow running the joint, and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who Phil bullies until Peter walks off the job and leaves his mother in tears. But his brother George lingers to comfort Rose, and we see the beginnings of a romance that turns into their marriage. Burbank begins to wage a war against his sister-in-law and Peter, a draining act that summons memories of the mentorship, affection and intimacy of a former cowboy.
