In 2013, director Guillermo del Toro gave fans of monster films a new one to look out for with his film ‘Pacific Rim.’ The film revolves around the constant struggle of humans in a Kaiju infested world. Simultaneously, the government continues to build Jaegars, robotic war machines, to fight off the monsters. The film was received quite well because of its themes of action and sci-fi combined with the Toro’s good reputation of making fantasy films that are loved by all age groups of people. This film even got a sequel in 2017 titled ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ which was directed by Steven S DeKnight. Now, Netflix will breathe life back into this franchise with its upcoming animated series ‘Pacific Rim: The Black’.
What we can deduce from the minute-long clip
As we already know, the series will show an abandoned Australia due to all the Kaiju attacks. The previous trailer was ominous and gave us some sense of what we can expect. A new trailer by Netflix is slightly more chaotic and even features some Kaiju-Jaegar action. Almost the entirety of it focuses on what the “black” is as we hear announcements about initiating it all over Australia. It sounds like the last resort authorities have to turn to, and as humans try their best to fight off some monsters, the two leads (siblings Hayley and Taylor) also join the battle with their Jaegar. Even by the end of the trailer, we are unsure what the “black” really is. Still, if we had to take a wild guess based on context, it could probably be a high-tension evacuation protocol that people must follow under a time constraint or be perished with the land they stand on.
