Launching as a manga in 1997 and later as a Toei Animation anime in 1999, Eiichiro Oda’s smash-success One Piece has been entertaining readers and viewers for over twenty years. The excellent storytelling, compelling characters, and excellent sense of humor have ensured fans return with each new installment.
One Piece is an anime that is both pleasant and diversified. It is basically about a man called Monkey D. Luffy who desires to be king of the pirates. The anime performs admirably in almost every field enshrined in any anime production ranging from music, animation, and action.
Few other anime have exactly captured that same sense of adventure, kinship, and endless possibilities the way that One Piece has. While that’s probably for the best, it’s easy to get stuck in that anime void of not knowing what to do next after watching it.
With over 1000 episodes, there’s plenty to keep viewers hooked for hours of binge-watching. But what to do when you’ve caught up on pirate captain Monkey D. Luffy’s sea-faring adventures? We’ve pulled together a list of some of the best anime to watch if you love One Piece.
Fairy Tail

A young mage named Lucy Heartfilia is on the hunt for celestial gate keys, and the goal of her life is to become a full-fledged wizard by joining this renowned guild. During her search, she meets Natsu Dragneel and his partner Happy. They are on a quest to find Natsu’s foster father, the dragon Igneel.
Lucy falls victim to an abduction attempt after she is tricked by a man, only to be saved by Natsu. She is shocked to discover he is a member of Fairy Tail, and he invites her to join. She meets strange members of the guild, including the ice wizard Gray Fullbuster and the magic swordswoman Erza Scarlet. As a family, they face evil together, help those in need, and make new friends, all the while enjoying Fairy Tail’s never-ending adventure.
The unique quality of Fairy Tail is that it is good despite all the clichés in the plot. Generic shounens are not bad, and Fairy Tail capitalizes on the aspects we love about them.
Considering how many characters appear in this story, it seems there wouldn’t be enough time to tell the story of everyone. All of them receive plenty of screen time, despite not being the main characters. In most cases, Natsu, Grey, Lucy, and Happy will be the ones being followed, but you will also see that everyone else will be included.
Hunter x Hunter (2011)
The world of Hunter x Hunter is one where hunters perform all manner of dangerous tasks, like capturing criminals and searching for lost treasures in dangerous locations. Gon Freecss, who is twelve years old, is determined to become the best Hunter possible in order to track down his father, who was a Hunter himself and abandoned his son long ago. However, he soon discovers that achieving his goals will be much harder than he ever imagined.
On his way to becoming a Hunter, Gon meets the lively doctor-in-training Leorio, vengeful Kurapika, and rebellious former assassin Killua. They take the Hunter Exam together, which has a low success rate and a high death rate.
In the course of their journey, Gon and his friends face many hardships and struggles. They will come across a variety of monsters, creatures, and characters while learning what it means to be a Hunter.
Although a story about finding one’s father may sound simple, it’s the journey taken to achieve this goal that makes this series so special. Each of the arcs in HxH is incredibly well-written. This anime has one of the finest scripts in the shounen genre; the depth and flow of the story, enthralling characters, and the vivid world-building create an absorbing tale that can captivate for hours on end.
The variety of HxH’s story is impressive. Across six story arcs, HxH straddles several genres. Additionally, the series is also capable of undergoing significant tonal shifts easily. This series is excellent at retaining its viewers’ interest. As you watch every episode, you’ll find yourself breezing through most of them.
Naruto
The Nine-Tailed Fox, or Kyuubi, attacked Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village, just prior to Naruto Uzumaki’s birth. In order to end the Kyuubi’s rampage, the village’s leader, the Fourth Hokage, sacrificed himself by sealing the monster within the newborn Naruto.
Naruto is now a hyperactive and knuckle-headed ninja still living in Konohagakure. Shunned because of the Kyuubi inside him, Naruto struggles to find his place in the village, while his burning desire to become the Hokage of Konohagakure leads him not only to some great new friends but also some deadly foes.
The anime features martial arts fight scenes and a tone that occasionally shifts between serious and lighthearted, depending on the background and buildup. Naruto is a character you can relate to, and even his supporting cast is well-written. Seeing the characters develop over time is also rewarding.
Naruto stands out because of its character development and is probably one of the best in its category. In the same breath, as it captures the excitement of being a child, it also conveys the pain of being alone. The tone of the show alternates between dramatic and humorous, taking you on an emotional journey.
Naruto contains some of the best battles ever written and drawn in anime history, in addition to being packed with action. Due to the depth of the writing, many of the dialogues end up going down in history as life-changing quotes.
There’s no doubt that every anime fan has seen or heard of Naruto; it’s a true classic.
Gintama
An alien race called the Amanto has invaded Earth and taken over feudal Japan. As a result, swords are prohibited in Japan, and samurai are treated with disregard as a result.
In spite of his love of sweets and his job as a yorozuya, Gintoki Sakata still possesses the heart of a samurai. Shinpachi Shimura, with his glasses and big heart, Kagura with her umbrella and bottomless stomach, as well as Sadaharu, their dog, all accompany him in his jack-of-all-trades line of work. In fact, these odd jobs are not always simple, as they frequently run into the police, ragtag rebels, and assassins, often leading to humorous but unfortunate outcomes.
Who said it was easy to be an errand boy?
The story is undoubtedly haphazard, but Gintama is certainly consistent in its approach. Gintoki and his two friends, Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura, do odd jobs for people, argue or fight with Shinsengumi, drink strawberry milkshakes, and try to make a small difference in the world.
The episodes usually don’t get any more serious than that. Because Gintama is a comedy series, its haphazard approach to storytelling works well. Gintama doesn’t lose its sense of humor during its dramatizations or story arcs, despite its serious content.
Its comedy is a major strength, not only in its style and delivery but also in its content. Despite the series’ parodies, it is consistently engaging, so the viewer doesn’t feel like a joke has gone over their heads.
Black Clover
On the same day, Asta and Yuno were abandoned at the same church. They were raised together as children and learned about the “Wizard King”—a title awarded to the kingdom’s strongest mage—and pledged to compete for the position of the future Wizard King.
As they grew older, though, the obvious difference between them became apparent. While Yuno can wield magic with incredible power and control, Asta is unable to do so and must rely on physical training to try to awaken his powers.
Yuno receives a magnificent Grimoire with a four-leaf clover when they reach the age of 15, while Asta receives nothing. Soon later, Yuno is attacked by a person named Lebuty, who is only interested in Yuno’s Grimoire. Asta makes an attempt to attack Lebuty, but he is outmatched.
When he hears Yuno’s voice, he finds the strength to persevere even though he is hopeless and on the verge of defeat. Asta receives a five-leaf clover Grimoire, a “Black Clover,” which gives him the power to defeat Lebuty after releasing his inner emotions in a rage. After a few days, the two companions go out into the world with the same objective in mind: to become the Wizard King!
The story of Asta’s journey is well written and extremely satisfying. We feel like we have been on this journey with Asta all along. Everyone enjoys a feel-good underdog story. There has never been a bigger underdog than Black Clover.
The no power vs. all power dynamic is evident, but their interactions with one another are smooth and unique to Black Clover. There is a refreshing blend of personalities and traits among the Magic Knights and their squads.
Soul Eater
The Death Weapon Meister Academy, a technical academy led by the Shinigami—Lord Death himself—is located in Death City. Its goal is to raise “Death Scythes” for the Shinigami to use against the fantastical world’s numerous evils.
However, these Death Scythes are not made from physical weapons; but are born from human hybrids with the capacity to change their bodies into Demon Weapons, and only after they’ve consumed the souls of 99 evil beings and one witch’s soul.
Soul Eater Evans, a Demon Scythe who only seems to care about what’s cool, desires to become a Death Scythe with the help of his straight-laced wielder or meister, Maka Albarn. The duo study and works alongside Death the Kid, the Shinigami’s own son, who is an obsessive-compulsive dual wielder of twin pistols Patty and Liz, and the hotheaded Black Star and his caring weapon Tsubaki.
Soul Eater follows these Shibusen students as they go on missions to collect souls and safeguard the city from external threats, all while working together under the scorching sun to improve their mental, physical, and spiritual growth.
This sounds pretty formulaic, nothing you haven’t seen before. It may seem that this is the main goal in the first few episodes, but soon after, you will realize there is actually a deeper story developing. Soul Eater isn’t a complex or clever story, but what happens during the story makes it watchable and interesting. The action is always present, and there’s humor, but there can also be serious moments when required.
In this anime, the characters are the heart of the story. Soul Eater is renowned for its characters. The cast is colorful. Even the supporting cast is memorable. Almost every character gives you at least one reason for liking or disliking them.
Bleach
High school student Ichigo Kurosaki is an ordinary young man until his family is attacked by a Hollow, a spirit that seeks to devour human souls. Then, he encounters a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki, who is injured while defending Ichigo’s family. When Rukia offers him her power, Ichigo takes it in order to save his family and becomes a Soul Reaper.
As Rukia has not been able to regain her powers, it is left to Ichigo to hunt down the Hollows and save their town. He is not alone in his fight, however, since his classmates Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Uryuu Ishida also join in, each with their own special abilities.
The young Soul Reaper soon learns that the Hollows are not the only threat to the human world as he and his comrades get used to their new duties and support each other on and off the battlefield.
The anime series Bleach is among the best. From the moment you watch it, you’re left wondering what will happen next. The action and humor are both excellent. The storyline is gripping. There are many plot twists. There are amazing characters in this anime.
Because they are all so lovable, it is impossible to hate them all. Additionally, unlike some other anime, the characters don’t all look the same. They all have unique looks and personalities.
Many anime watchers think of Bleach when they think of shounen anime, and it’s not hard to see why. Watching this anime is a great combination of action, adventure, and comedy. It is a must-see for fans of anime. The anime Bleach is probably one of the greatest anime series today.
Boku no Hero Academia
In recent years, “quirks,” new superpowers discovered, have become more common as 80 percent of humanity possesses various powers, such as manipulating elements and shapeshifting. As a result, the rest of the world is completely powerless, and Izuku Midoriya is one of them.
The ambitious middle schooler has dreamed of becoming a hero since he was a child. Izuku’s misfortunes push him to admire heroes and take notes on them whenever he has the opportunity. But it appears that Izuku’s perseverance has paid off: he encounters All Might, the world’s greatest hero and his personal idol. All Might has a one-of-a-kind quirk that can be passed down through the generations, and he has picked Izuku to be his successor!
Izuku is accepted into UA High School, a prestigious high school known for its excellent hero training program, after months of grueling training, and this year’s freshman look especially promising. Izuku will soon discover what it means to be a hero, thanks to his strange but gifted classmates and the rising danger of a villainous organization.
We focus on Izuku’s dreams throughout Boku no Hero Academia, a young boy who aspires to become the greatest hero in a world filled with heroes. The task is not menial, considering that every man and woman in the world has a quirk that gives them a distinct advantage over Izuku, who was born without one.
Obviously, the story has been told a multitude of times before, but this show takes that story and makes it unique. The show will be able to grab your full attention and really immerse you in the world it was meant to depict. With the protagonist’s die-hard attitude, you will grow very fond of him by the end of the series.
All the characters have different personalities, quirks, and traits that make them unique.
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
Several strange labyrinths may be found all over the world, each hiding tremendous treasures. These mysterious locations, known as “Dungeons,” are supposed to be the work of Magi, a rare class of magicians who also assist humans in building empires by guiding them to dungeons. Djinns, supernatural beings who rule the labyrinths, give conquerors access to their vast power and choose them as possible king candidates.
Aladdin, a nice young magician, has spent his life in isolation and is anxious to explore the world after he has finally left his home behind. Only his mentor Ugo—a djinn who Aladdin may summon with his flute—accompanies him on his journey.
However, after destroying a local merchant’s supply cart, Aladdin quickly becomes friends with the brave Alibaba Saluja. Alibaba advises that they try to conquer the nearest dungeon to pay for the damages, which would be the first step in an epic adventure that will determine the fate of the entire world.
You may expect a fascinating story with a setting based on Arabian Nights. Thankfully, Magi is constructed in such a way that the attention on the two major protagonists is well-balanced and has its own distinct vibe. The plot can become quite dark and riveting as a result of this while maintaining the narrative. The characters in a show must be well-rounded for the plot to work. No matter how great a set piece, it won’t work without strong protagonists. And Magi delivers.
What differentiates this from other shounen is the political aspect. As a king, you must reign. But how will you do it? Through this question, the different nations and factions can interact in a believable environment without it ever feeling like the author is asking you to pretend they would do that.
Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Tsunayoshi Sawada isn’t any good, to put it lightly. He’s clumsy, talentless, and hopelessly in love with Kyouko Sasagawa, the school’s idol, a girl far out of his league. His classmates have dubbed him “Loser Tsuna,” and he appears to be the personification of failure disguised as a middle-schooler.
When Tsuna meets the mysterious Reborn, his life is flipped upside down; Reborn just so happens to be a hitman and, more shockingly, a baby! Reborn is sent from Italy’s most powerful Mafia family with the difficult task of training the drab middle schooler to succeed the legendary Vongola family’s ninth leader, who is about to retire.
Loser Tsuna has a long way ahead of him, but with the support of his new criminal associates and his odd home tutor, he might just succeed.
Through the course of the anime, Tsuna grows and matures, becoming stronger and stronger each time he fights his enemies. He encounters well-written fights that will keep you glued to the screen.
Characters in the story are diverse, with a wide range of personalities following an unlikely protagonist. The characters are very well portrayed; you can’t help but love all of them. They change greatly over the course of the anime, and it’s worthwhile to watch them grow up.
Every single character has at least one good quality, whether they’re the protagonist, a supporting character, or even the antagonist. The main cast has great chemistry, and you root for them throughout. You’ll be jealous of Tsuna, he has the perfect range of friends, all with flaws that fit their characters, and they all have a strong loyalty to him.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Simon and Kamina grew up in a deep, underground village hidden from the fabled surface. Simon is a shy young boy with no real ambitions, whereas Kamina is a free-spirited loose cannon intent on creating a name for himself. Simon discovers a mysterious object while excavating the earth one day, which turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient war artifact they named Lagann.
With the help of Yoko Littner, a fiery redhead with a big gun who explores the world above, Simon and Kamina fend off a surprise onslaught from the surface with their new weapon.
The sky is now visible due to the battle, prompting Simon and Kamina to embark on a journey with Yoko to explore the surface’s wastelands. They soon join the struggle against the “Beastmen,” humanoid beings who terrorize humanity’s remnants in powerful robots known as “Gunmen.” Despite numerous setbacks and hardships, the group heroically fights these new enemies with other survivors to reclaim the surface while eventually revealing a galaxy-sized mystery.
Gurren Lagann is simply breathtaking. It is an endlessly thrilling journey from humble beginnings to the most fantastic of endings—an absolute must-see. Throughout the series, there are so many memorable moments, lines, and ideas that they imprint themselves into your very soul.
Although Tengen Toppa has an amazing story, it is not about the story. This isn’t a logical progression, strategy, conflict of interests, world-building, sci-fi exploration, or any of the other ideas in it. It’s about the deconstruction of them all. Aspects of the show arouse and reinforce the viewer’s zeal for this cause. Tengen Toppa is also excellent at moving people emotionally. When you watch it, you will laugh, cry, and be moved.
Nanatsu no Taizai
The revered but feared Holy Knights of Britannia utilize extremely strong magic to safeguard the region of Britannia and its kingdoms in a setting comparable to the European Middle Ages. A small faction of Knights, however, is said to have betrayed their homeland and turned their blades against their companions in an attempt to overthrow Liones’ ruler.
The Holy Knights defeated them, but whispers persisted that the fabled knights known as the “Seven Deadly Sins” were still alive. The Holy Knights conducted their own coup d’état ten years later and so became the new, tyrannical rulers of the Kingdom of Liones.
The adventures of Elizabeth, the third princess of the Kingdom of Liones, and her search for the Seven Deadly Sins are chronicled in Nanatsu no Taizai. She enlists their assistance not only to reclaim her kingdom from the Holy Knights but also to seek justice in an unjust world.
The story is excellently paced in that it adheres to the typical format of battle after battle while gradually introducing each of the main characters and forwarding the plot. This story moves beyond the commonplace good-guy-vs-bad-guy cliche beautifully. In a beautiful way, it asserts that there is no ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ As the series progresses, it becomes increasingly evident that each character is flawed and selfish in their own way.
Taizai has a plethora of characters, and many of them see some interesting characterization and development. Both the personalities of the characters and their interactions make this show so entertaining to watch.
This is a story about journeying, with constantly unique scenarios, purposeful character exploration, a complete narrative, and themes of sin and atonement. There is a good amount of hilarity, as well as clashes between characters.
Kami no Tou
There is a tower that summons “Regulars,” chosen people who are promised that their greatest desires will be fulfilled. Everything awaits those who reach the top, whether it be fortune, fame, authority, or something that surpasses them all.
Twenty-Fifth Bam is a boy who has spent his entire life in a dark cave with a dirtied cloth and an unreachable light. As a result, when a girl named Rachel came to him through the light, his entire life was turned upside down. Rachel taught him a lot about the outside world when they became good friends.
His world falls apart when Rachel tells him she has to leave him to climb the Tower. A miracle happens as he sets his sights on the tower, promising to follow her no matter what it takes.
Bam, a young boy who was not picked by the Tower but opened its gates on his own, embarks on his journey. His type is known as “Irregulars,” entities that have rocked the Tower’s foundations each time they step within.
The mysteries are one of the series’ best points, with almost endless opportunities for development based on what they reveal episode by episode. The intrigue of the tower, the concepts of irregulars and regulars, and the general lore of the series really do suck you in and keep you excited for the next episode.
The ruthless environment of the tower in this story implies that only the fittest, not the morally pure, survive, which leads to many heartbreaking moments among the bittersweet victories. The boundary between hero and villain is frequently blurred, alliances shift frequently for personal gain, and bad guys don’t excuse their acts with sob stories. And, the villains are not insane unreasonable people created just to incite drama.
Akame ga Kill!
The Revolutionary Army’s covert assassination branch, Night Raid, was formed to overthrow Prime Minister Honest, whose selfishness and hunger for power has led him to exploit the child emperor’s inexperience. The rest of the country is left to wallow in poverty, strife, and ruin without a strong and benevolent leader.
Even though the Night Raid members are all experienced killers, they recognize that taking lives is not something to be proud of and that they will almost certainly face retribution as they mercilessly eliminate anybody who stands in the way of the revolution.
Tatsumi, a naive boy from a rural village who had embarked on a journey to help his impoverished hometown and was won over not only by Night Raid’s principles but also by their commitment, is the newest member of this merry band of assassins. Tatsumi is followed as he fights the Empire and encounters powerful weapons, enemy assassins, challenges to his own morals and ideals, and finally, what it means to be an assassin with a cause in Akame ga Kill!
Akame Ga Kill! takes you by surprise right from the beginning. While it seems to be a normal innocent anime, it turns out to be bloody that pulls at your heartstrings.
The anime has a very realistic feel to it. In real life, this is not surprising, especially when the main characters are assassins, but for some reason, most anime simply don’t make people die by creating impossible situations. That’s not the case with Akame ga Kill.
It has unique and likable characters. Each of them is distinct in its own way. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that characters will die, and they’ll suffer a lot before death, so this connection of liking, or even loving for some, is crucial to how the anime manipulates your emotions.
Trigun
There is a $$60,000,000,000 bounty on the head of Vash the Stampede. The reasoning is that he’s a ruthless villain who annihilates anyone who stands in his way and flattens entire cities for amusement, earning him the moniker “The Humanoid Typhoon.”
Wherever he travels, he leaves a trail of death and ruin in his wake, and anyone who even looks him in the eye can consider themselves dead—or so the legends go. Vash is, in reality, a giant softie who claims never to have killed anyone and avoids fighting at all costs.
Vash explores the wastes of the planet Gunsmoke with his crazy doughnut obsession and buffoonish attitude in tow, all the while being followed by two insurance agents, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, who try to minimize his impact on the public.
However, their misadventures quickly turn into life-or-death scenarios when a crew of famous assassins is recruited to bring the trio suffering. Vash’s agonizing past will be revealed, and his morals and values will be tested to their limits.
This is a series of episodic adventures, where each episode tells a different story involving trials and hardships the characters face. Each adventure in this series is linked to the next, so it has a sense of progression and development.
There are a lot of characters in this episodic adventure series, but only a few of them are recurring. At the very least, the protagonist, Vash, makes up for it. Vash is a complicated protagonist, and you’ll see that there’s more to him than meets the eye even in the first episode.
The characters are well-developed and believable. Vash the Stampede is one of anime’s most multi-faceted characters; he doesn’t have just one side to him. Wolfwood, his companion, is also a multi-dimensional and developed character.
Hajime no Ippo
Having been bullied his entire life, Makunouchi Ippo has always dreamed of changing himself but has never had the passion to do it. He is constantly doing errands and being beaten up by his classmates. In the midst of yet another round of bullying, Ippo is rescued by Takamura Mamoru, a boxer.
Ippo passes out due to his injuries and is taken to the Kamogawa boxing gym for treatment. He is awed and amazed by his new surroundings in the gym when he regains consciousness, but he lacks the confidence to try anything. Takamura pushes Ippo to punch a punching bag with a picture of a classmate. Ippo only feels something stirring inside him after that and asks Takamura to train him in boxing.
Takamura believes Ippo lacks the necessary skills and assigns him an impossible mission with a one-week deadline. Ippo trains intensely to complete the goal within the time restriction, motivated by a sudden urge to become stronger for himself and his hardworking mother. Thus begins Ippo’s ascension to the top of the boxing world.
Undoubtedly, the characters are what make this anime so special. The characters are so likable, so original, and so fully developed that you root for them in the end.
Even those that only last an episode, even Ippo’s opponents, are given such plausible and compelling backstories that you might find yourself siding against him for a match or two. And how these characters take their lives so seriously that you get caught up in it, and you begin to believe that such a world could exist.
Hajime no Ippo is a fantastic anime series that manages to capture the essence of boxing with some genuinely unforgettable fights.
Vinland Saga
Thorfinn grew up hearing tales of old sailors who had traversed the seas and arrived at Vinland, the mythical land. It’s claimed to be pleasant and fertile, a place where fighting isn’t necessary—a far cry from the frozen village in Iceland where he was born, and certainly not his current existence as a mercenary. Now he lives in a war zone.
As each year passes, the war between England and the Danes worsens. For the viking mercenaries, death has become a way of life, and they are savoring every moment of it. Forming an alliance with either side will result in a significant shift in power, and the Vikings are content to build a name for themselves and seize any prizes they can.
Thorfinn must take revenge on Askeladd, the man who murdered his father, amidst the chaos. The Vikings only paradise seemed to be the ongoing era of war and death.
Vinland Saga carries a profound feeling. No matter how accurate the events are, you are watching monumental history unfold. Even though it can be frustrating at times, it’s engrossing in the end. Vinland Saga is about Viking pride, loss of innocence, betrayal, and the quest for the biggest bounty.
As opposed to focusing only on the main characters, the script often follows a number of mercenaries; they talk about their past battles and share their thoughts on other characters. A well-written story can be told with slow pacing. This anime is impressive in many aspects, with beautifully drawn artwork, a realistic setting, and creative writing.
Akatsuki no Yona
Princess Yona enjoys a life of luxury and leisure, entirely shielded from the issues of the supposedly peaceful Kingdom of Kouka; but the assassination of the king and the betrayal of her beloved cousin Su-won put Yona’s life in jeopardy.
When she is forced to flee with only her childhood friend and bodyguard, Son Hak, the naive princess rapidly learns that Kouka is not the idyllic place she had imagined. Poverty, strife, and corruption abound, making recovering the throne a wishful fantasy in the current situation of the kingdom.
Princess Yona embarks on a coming-of-age adventure as she confronts the harsh truths of her kingdom in Akatsuki no Yona. Yona must find a means to restore Kouka to its previous glory while being chased relentlessly by the armies of the new King of Kouka, with only a mysterious legend to guide her.
This show appears to be your ordinary run-of-the-mill shoujo reverse harem at first, but at the conclusion of the first episode, it appears to be more than that; it’s a well-written drama that focuses on vengeance and betrayal, and it blows other shoujos out of the water.
Yona is pretty much one of the best female characters of all time; she starts out weak and vulnerable like a small kitten and grows into something bigger, a bold, independent creature awaiting its prey; it’s done in such a way that her development is spot on.
The show is enjoyable to watch, with no plot holes and dialogue that appears to be informative. The plot may appear conventional at first, but give the show a chance, and you’ll be treated to some of the best anime developments in years.
One Punch Man
Saitama, who appears to be average, has a pretty unusual hobby: being a hero. He trained for three years, losing all of his hair in the process, in order to achieve his childhood desire. Saitama is now tremendously powerful, to the point where no enemy can defeat him in a fight. In truth, the ability to defeat evildoers with a single punch has resulted in an unexpected problem: he is no longer able to enjoy the excitement of battle and has grown bored.
This all changes when Genos, a 19-year-old cyborg, arrives and expresses his desire to be Saitama’s disciple after witnessing his abilities. Genos suggests the two of them join the Hero Association in order to become certified heroes who will be acknowledged for their positive contributions to society, and Saitama readily agrees, surprised that no one knows who he is.
And thus, the story of One Punch Man begins as an action-comedy about an eccentric character who yearns to battle powerful enemies in order to rekindle the excitement he previously felt and maybe, just maybe, become famous in the process.
There is a lot of power in Saitama. It’s boring to be the strongest. The concept of looking for someone stronger or at least entertaining through life is a funny one, especially when no one is aware of how strong you are.
It’s impossible not to like Saitama, even the secondary and tertiary characters. It doesn’t have great character development, but that’s not what you’re looking for in this anime. Saitama is the strongest character. It’s meant to be that way.
While watching an episode, it’s easy to lose yourself in it, and you won’t believe how fast time moves when you’re entertained.
Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho
Yuusuke Urameshi, a delinquent who is 14-years-old with a grim future, is given a miracle chance to change his life when he throws himself in front of a moving automobile to save a small kid one fateful day. The spirit realm’s authorities are baffled by his ultimate sacrifice because it is so out of character and aren’t ready to let him pass on yet.
Yuusuke is offered the chance to reclaim his life by completing a series of tasks by Koenma, the heir to the spirit realm’s throne. As a Spirit Detective, he is to thwart evil presences on Earth under the leadership of the death god Botan.
Yuusuke enlists the help of an ex-rival, Kazuma Kuwabara, as well as two demons with criminal histories, Hiei and Kurama. They train and battle together against enemies who would endanger humanity’s very existence.
Yu Yu Hakusho is a highly recommended show in this category for anyone who enjoys well-constructed fighting/action anime in general. The anime is a shounen, and as such, it contains some typical shounen clichés.
The title does manage to come up with unique and inventive ideas, as well as a superb story and dialogue, and with a sense of humor far beyond what should be expected from a shounen title.
Each of the characters has a strong identity. Yu Yu Hakusho’s characters may appear to have one-dimensional roles at first glance, but you will see that they have much more to them than meets the eye.
It isn’t just about the main character getting stronger and always being the hero in this show. Several of the characters show a great deal of character development, and the way in which the characters interact with each other, as well as their similarities and differences, make for very balanced chemistry between the characters.
