    Where Can I Stream Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood (2022)?

Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 12: A Space Age follows the ’70s-set high school coming-of-age film Dazed and Confused and the ’80s college flashback Everybody Wants Some. Childhood feels like the final chapter in a trilogy. Few American filmmakers are as skilled at taking audiences on nostalgic journeys as he is, and his latest, set in the Houston suburbs in the 1960s, completes a trilogy of films featuring stunning rotoscope animation (after Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly).

It depicts the story of a young child named Stanley (Milo Coy), who imagines himself as a covert astronaut enlisted to assist NASA at a period when anything seemed conceivable. Despite feeling a little disjointed at times, it accomplishes what all the best Linklater films strive for: immersing you in a specific time, place, and mood.

Apollo 10 12: A Space Age is narrated by Jack Black, who also voices Stanley as an adult. The ludicrous conscription of the young boy by a pair of NASA scientists, spoken by (and closely resembling) Glen Powell and Zachary Levi, who was shot in live-action before being animated over, begins childhood. Stanley’s grades aren’t bad, and the reason he was picked — or so he imagines and tells us — is that one of the Apollo modules was made a bit too tiny by accident and requires the assistance of a youngster.

It’s a brilliantly ludicrous notion handled straight, but before it gets too far, it shifts gears in a familiar freeze-frame-and-flashback style, immersing us in Stanley’s daily existence with his housewife mother (Lee Eddy), his low-level NASA employee father (Bill Wise), and his five elder brothers.

“Apollo 10 1/2” is primarily a nostalgia trip for Americans who watched as the country achieved one of its greatest scientific triumphs while riveted to their screens. (Depending on how autobiographical the film is, Linklater may have spent the afternoon at the adjacent AstroWorld amusement park before falling asleep in front of the TV during Armstrong’s moonwalk.) But it’s also a teleportation device for those who weren’t there, jam-packed with ordinary facts about life — the kind of observations that made the director’s “Boyhood” so popular with millennials.
