Artist Helen Deatry gives a glimpse into her creative process in this studio-based painting series, sharing the how-to of her original creations from start to finish.
Helen Dealtry wishes for you to unwind. And much the better if her new series “Art in Bloom With Helen Dealtry” inspires you to take up a paintbrush and try your hand at watercolor.
The half-hour series, which is executive produced by Chip and Joanna Gaines and is currently streaming on discovery+, follows the British-born textile designer as she gives viewers a glimpse into her creative process from her Hudson Valley studio, showing viewers how she creates a floral painting from a blank sheet of paper and tubes and jars of paint. Along the way, she’ll visit her adopted hometown of Hudson, New York, in search of inspiration, and she’ll inspire viewers to do the same.
Dealtry notes, “(The program is) very much oriented around nature because that’s my type of comfort level, inspiration, and wheelhouse, which is looking at nature and depicting it.” “And because I enjoy painting, (viewers will learn) a variety of watercolor and brush styles.” And we’ll be focusing on nature, which is primarily floral in nature. But, actually, I believe the show is just a nice, meditative moment in your day for me. I simply hope it’s a good, peaceful (show) whether you have it playing in the background or if you truly want to take up a paintbrush.”
Dealtry’s appearance on television was an interesting coincidence. She was teaching flower painting courses on Martha’s Vineyard about a decade ago when Joanna Gaines came to one of her seminars. They had been following one other on Instagram and knew each other’s work. Gaines remembered Dealtry, who was invited to shoot a pilot when she was seeking material for what would become Magnolia Network years later. Dealtry then found herself as the host of her own show, as if struck by lightning.
