“Block Party,” a Juneteenth comedy set in Grand Rapids and shot there, is currently in theatres and was released on June 8.
“Block Celebration,” written and produced by Lisa Mathis, a Grand Rapids native, is about a recent Harvard graduate who puts her career on wait to maintain her grandmother’s historic Juneteenth block party.
During the pandemic, Mathis said the idea for the film occurred to her as she yearned for the feeling of community she felt growing up in her Grand Rapids neighborhood.
While on set in the neighborhood, the star-studded cast of Antoinette Robertson, Margaret Avery, and Luenell generated a commotion. Mathis’ cousin, who owns House of Style Barber and Beauty on Division Avenue, provided inspiration for Luenell’s character, Debora, a salon owner. Reece’s salon served as the setting for several sequences in the film, with extras playing friends and coworkers.
Branch Out Productions, a female and Black-owned production business created by Mathis in 2019, is responsible for the film’s production.
