Published by Image Comics (The Walking Dead, 2003), ‘Spawn’ is a horror comic that revolves around an anti-hero of the same name. Written by Canadian comic book creator Todd McFarlane in the 90s, this series has had uncountable comic books and spin offs such as ‘Sam & Twitch’ and the Japanese manga ‘Shadows of Spawn.’ The series was received quite well from the beginning, having made a sale of 1.7 million copies. Todd McFarlane is also one of the founding members of Image Comics and has worked on some big films like ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’
What McFarlane has in store for the future of the franchise
Recently, McFarlane has announced that he is ready to turn his Span comics into an interlinked universe of superheroes, anti-heroes and villains that will contest with the already established likes of Marvel and DC Comics. Nothing is too clear yet, but gauging from his conversation with ComicBook, it is obvious that the 1997 Spawn film and the upcoming reboot are a very small part of the big picture he is planning. He already has an upcoming film, a TV show and a cartoon in the works, and although he confirms that none of this changes those plans, it does affect whether or not that will be it. McFarlane also revealed that he will be unveiling new characters every month now, and it sounds like he is trying to speed up the base of this “universe” so that more may follow.
