The credits sequence in Dawn Of The Dead is shot in a “found footage” style and depicts their arrival on an island, where they run out of supplies and are overwhelmed by zombies. Although viewers never see the survivors die since their camcorder is dropped in the brawl, it is thought that they all die. Previously, the survivors came across a tiny boat floating near the island and discovered the still-snapping head of a zombie inside a cooler in the same sequence. A few kayaks are also seen, stacked on the pier, which could indicate that other survivors had the same idea, fleeing to the island only to die from bite wounds and turn into zombies.
The “found footage” suggests that another group of survivors will later find the camcorder and watch the movie. Alternatively, perhaps the Dawn of the Dead survivors did survive and later recovered the camcorder, albeit this is most likely wishful thinking.
In any case, the credits sequence is an icing on the cake, demonstrating how unpredictable a zombie-infested world can be. The heroes’ achievement of their aim of reaching the island, only to meet their fate moments later. Dawn of the Dead is a suitable testament to Romero’s enduring legacy in this sense.
