Deep Water is a planned American psychological thriller film directed by Adrian Lyne and based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name published in 1957. The screenplay was written by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson. Tracy Letts, Rachel Blanchard, and Lil Rel Howery play supporting roles in the film, which also stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. Lyne’s return to filmmaking comes 20 years after his last feature, Unfaithful (2002).
The film is planned to air on Hulu on March 18, 2022, after many delays due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Vic and Melinda Van Allen, played by Affleck and de Armas, are a married couple whose mind games with one another turn twisted when people around them start dying. The couple avoids divorce by allowing each other to have lovers in their loveless marriage, but things got nasty when Highsmith exposes the American suburban mask.
According to the official synopsis, Lyne’s film will “take us inside the picture-perfect marriage of Vic (Affleck) and Melinda (de Armas) Van Allen to discover the dangerous mind games they play and what happens to the people who get caught up in them.”
A new teaser clip was published on Monday, introducing us to de Armas and Affleck’s lustful stare. With around one minute of video, it’s the final tease for a much-discussed, never-seen film. Lyne hadn’t made a film since Unfaithful in 2002, but he suddenly had two gorgeous movie stars willing to play R-rated ball in a Patricia Highsmith adaptation written by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, and the buzz was immediate. Then, during filming, Affleck and de Armas fell in love, heightening the mystery and drama. Then the pandemic hit, Affleck and de Armas split up, the release date was pushed back, and an intriguing little film with a lot of promise vanished in the mists of new world order.
