Faking It: Tears of a Crime on the Discovery channel has three experts who examine film of later-to-be-convicted criminals claiming their innocence. For those who are inexperienced with the program, like me. There is a forensic psychologist known as the Profiler (Kerry Daynes), a body language expert known as The Watcher (Cliff Lansley), and a professor of linguistics known as The Listener. It resembles a group of superheroes or The Chase quizzers.
The first in a new line of Faking It specials focuses on the various on-camera denials made by American R&B superstar R Kelly, who is currently awaiting sentencing following his long-overdue convictions for numerous heinous sex offenses against underage girls. Kelly is currently in the process of being sentenced.
When Kelly moves his shoulders, indicating that the singer isn’t confident in what he was saying, Lansley gets very enthused (his innocence, basically).
Although this unintentionally self-incriminating information is fascinating, it feels like it was added on after a more substantial documentary on the case as a whole. Jim DeRogatis, the persistent reporter who broke the majority of the stories against Kelly and whose accusations ultimately resulted in the singer’s conviction in 2021, is the main contributor here. If only Jimmy Saville still existed and the British media had a reporter with DeRogatis’ terrier-like demeanor.
