    Finally, A Sequel To Cult Classic 1988 Movie Coming To America

    Eddie Murphy’s hit 1988 movie, “Coming to America,” is a few weeks away. In a conversation with Extra, the comedian explains why it took so long for the sequel. According to Murphy, there was no real movement towards the sequel until the last couple of years. One reason could be that the original movie not grossing too well financially in 1988 to spark a sequel instantly. Murphy states that out of all the movies he has done in the past 40 years, only Coming to America is one that garnered a ‘Cult-following’. The comedian admits to coming up with the sequel idea around five to six years ago, and then the project taking four years to come together finally.

    The sequel, aptly named ‘Coming 2 America’, is set in Zamunda, a lush and royal country. A newly crowned King Akeem played my Eddie Murphy and his trusted companion named Semmi played by Arsenio Hall, to embark on a hysterical journey that has them traveling from their homeland in Africa to Queens in New York looking for a son he never knew about. The first movie from 1988 was about Akeem himself while younger as
    a crown prince, coming to America to search for a bride for himself.

    Releasing on 5th March 2021, the cast includes Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jeramine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Wesley Snipes and James Earl Jones. The screenplay is by Barry W Blaustein and Kenya Barris, & David Sheffield. The story is by Barry W Blaustein & David Sheffield, and Justin Kanew. While John Landis directed the original, the sequel is directed by Craig Brewer. After the first movie, in 1989 a pilot for a spin off television series based on the movie was made, but that was never picked up for a series, leaving fans disappointed.
