Taika Waititi Set To Write For Live-Action Remake Of ‘Flash Gordon’

Flash Gordon, directed by the director of Thor: Love and Thunder, was originally intended to be an animated film but things have changed.

While it appeared that Seth MacFarlane, with his love of all things 80s and his use of the property in Ted, would be in charge of bringing Flash Gordon back to the big screen, it now appears that it will be Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi who will be dipping his hand into another comic book franchise. Jungle Cruise director John Davis said in an interview that Waititi is now working on a live-action film, two years after being recruited in to work on an animated Flash Gordon film.

Davis revealed that Taika is writing it in an interview with Collider to coincide with the premiere of Jungle Cruise this weekend. He also said that It was a film that had a significant impact on Taika as a child and he considers it to be one of his favorite films. They decided on a live-action version since it fit with Taika’s vision for the movie.

Attempts to resurrect Gordon have been ongoing since the character was mentioned in Ted in 2012, and despite Waititi’s busy schedule, which includes a turn directing a new Star Wars film, Davis is adamant that the Flash Gordon project is something the filmmaker is truly excited about.

Finally, Davis expressed his satisfaction with waiting for Waititi to find a time in his schedule to direct the film, and expressed confidence that it will happen at some point. He explained that they’ve gone through the development process rather than the writing process, and that Taika has set out the characters, the movie, the way in, what it’s about, the tone, and so on in great detail, and that he can’t wait to see it. They’ll wait for him until he’s able to commit time to the project, he said.
