Recently an announcement has been made that two anime series of FLCL will be aired soon- FLCL Grunge and FLCL Shoegaze. The original series was released in 2000 in Japan and didn’t make much of an impression.
But the same was released in the US after three years, in,2003, and won the hearts of the viewers. So, what made the FLCL such an exception, and what new details and plot the viewers will be witnessing in the new season? Here’s a look at all that happened in the previous original series.
In the first season, we come across the main hero of the series- Naota. He lives with his elder brother, who leaves his village to play basketball in America. Noata faces serious issues as he experiences puberty at the time when his elder brother’s girlfriend starts dropping hints at him.
While dealing with this confusion, he meets a weird girl. The weirdo eventually turns out to have come from Mars. She carries with her an instrument that looks like a bass guitar. Using it, she makes a passage in Naota’s brain from where fighting robots arrive into this planet where Naota lives. Romance sparks up between them.
FLCL Progressive came out as a sequel movie to the FLCL on September 28, 2018. However, the movie didn’t follow the previous storyline and remained a separate work. HidomiHibajari, the main lead, is shown as a girl whose life revolves around school, home, and music. Her headphones are inseparable. Her simple life receives a blow when she meets the weird girl with a guitar.
At the same time, she encounters strange things- as a robot breaks into her room. Hidomi and her classmate- Ko Ide are saved by the weird guitar girl. Though after the incident, Hidomi notices that a horn starts growing from her forehead. The mystery remains. The plot will reveal how all this interconnects with a weird lady with the guitar.
In the sequel which follows it- FLCL Alternative, we come across another character Kana Koumoto. A simple student, who would just hang out with her friends, and immersed herself in her little world. She lives in a village where life is not much happening. Though one day out of the blue, she and her friends decide to work on a bottle rocket and launch it.
Though even the project might be a total failure, it was fun to escape the monotonous schedule. A surprising incident takes place when they complete their bottle rocket. A robot crashes the rocket and a pink lady emerges then from behind. In a blink of an eye, the whole picture for Kana changes.
Will there be a new season of FLCL?
It has been confirmed by the director- Jason DeMarco that a new season-FLCL Grunge will be aired in 2023. The season will be followed by the next season- FLCL Shoegaze. The announcement was made on March 17, 2022. The previous release for FLCL: Alternative and Progressive took place in 2018.
What will follow the plot of FLCL Grunge?
There was a fight over the rights, as the studio split up. The creators managed to keep the same voice artist and the original band- The Pillows, which appeared in the first season. Hitoshi Takekiyo is looking after the production of the FLCL Grunge, the season which is named after the rock music genre and will be aired soon. Montblanc Pictures group will be looking after its production.
As per the previous season, the season will bring a new theme, with a new set of characters. Though there is a chance we will see the same weird girl with her guitar. The plot will most probably cover teens who are dealing with their upcoming adolescence, like in the previous seasons. But what will be the adventures this time we will see in the new plot?
