Mexico Gas Leak Makes #Godzilla Trend On Twitter

As a result of video footage of a fireball erupting in the Gulf of Mexico, a slew of Godzilla and Cthulufans and theorists have surfaced on social media, with the mythical creatures trending on Twitter. All fantastic news for drawing attention to both the Godzilla versus Kong film and the new Netflix anime series Godzilla Singular Point, but not so good when the true reason for the strange visuals was revealed, which turned out to be as potentially disastrous as the coming of the King of Monsters himself.

A gas leak at an offshore oil rig in the Campeche Sound, part of the Gulf of Mexico, caused the eruption seen on camera. Flames erupted from the sea after a break in the undersea pipeline, evoking Godzilla’s debut in many of his previous film appearances, and it was easy to see why fans of the kaiju saw the link. While the fire is being put out and no casualties have been recorded as of this writing, the scene itself could easily be mistaken for something out of a movie, with a bubbling sea of fire looking like something out of a fantasy novel.

While the issue appears to be under control presently, that did not stop references to the monsters’ arrival from circulating on Twitter. While we are all relieved that Godzilla’s scaly head did not emerge from the sea, as the world has enough problems as it is, many admirers of Japan’s biggest export would have welcomed the arrival like a long-lost family member. They would have been destroyed seconds later.

While the situation may have provided some light humor with speculations about what might be about to make its presence known to the world – whether it’s Godzilla, Cthulu, Aquaman, or Davy Jones – the incident will definitely lead to more serious discussions about environmental issues and the consequences of such an accident.
