Godzilla Vs. Kong… Vs. Pacific Rim?

On the January 24th, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. released the jaw-dropping trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong. Directed by Adam Wingard and starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), this film is set to hit theatres on March 26th. Since before the release of the trailer, fans have used limited resources available to them such as post credit scenes from ‘Kong: Skull Island’ and ‘Godzilla 2: King of Monsters’, extremely short footages released by official sources and the poster for ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ to decipher, breakdown and theorise what they can expect from the film. However, it seems like fans are not the only ones with ingenious thinking, as a Twitter thread from last night reveals that ‘Shape of Water’ and ‘Pacific Rim’ director Guillermo del Toro is equally invested in the franchise.

New film idea originated on Twitter

When a fan took to Twitter to show appreciation for the scene where we see Godzilla surrounded by neon buildings in the trailer, photographer Stephen King quoted their tweet recommending that they check out ‘Pacific Rim’. In response, del Toro tweeted that he would love for the two Legendary Pictures films, Godzilla and Pacific Rim, to co-exist in the same universe. Naturally, this sent fans in a frenzy, and later Toro had to clarify that what he said was simply from a fan perspective and not because they have any plans to return with new Pac Rim films.

    Grateful to Mike Lynch

Although this cleared up the confusion, it did leave fans with an appetite for some Kaiju-Jaeger action that involved the titans from Legendary’s MonsterVerse, and to somewhat satisfy it, video editor Mike Lynch made a trailer titled ‘Godzilla vs. Kong vs. Pacific Rim.’ As expected, in this trailer, we see Kong going up against a Jaeger with his already famous battle axe while Godzilla, too, wreaks havoc. Avid fans of the films will remember that in 2017 Steven S DeKnight (‘Pacific Rim Uprising,’ 2018) also claimed that Legendary’s MonsterVerse and Pac Rim’s Kaijus and Jaegers could be a part of the same universe as it was a “theoretical possibility.”
