“Goodnight Mommy” is not based on a true story. The plot of Goodnight Mommy centers on a woman and her two boys as they fall into a pit of distrust and paranoia. The two little boys are horrified to move in with their mother and discover that she has bandages covering her face from a recent treatment. However, this is not the only difference they notice. Her conduct appears to be diverging from what they are accustomed to, becoming more unpredictable. The two young boys start to wonder whether the lady posing as their mother is truly a forger.

The original 2014 film, which was Austria’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards but didn’t receive a nomination, was written and directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Based on a scenario written by Kyle Warren, the Goodnight Mommy adaptation will be directed by Matt Sobel (Take Me To The River). The face-wrapped mother will be played by two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts, who has experience acting in English-language remakes of foreign horror movies after appearing in the 2002 version of The Ring. Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti (Big Little Lies; Cameron also appears in The Boys) will play her character’s two sons on either side of her.

The future movie will also include Jeremy Bobb (The Outsider), Crystal Lucas-Perry (Mimesis Nosferatu), and Peter Hermann (Younger) in presently unidentified supporting parts, in addition to Watts and the Crovetti brothers. Along with producing the picture with Franz and Fiala, the directors of the original, Watts will star in it as well. The movie was financed by Amazon and will be released internationally. Amazon Studios will co-produce the movie with Animal Kingdom and the Paris-based production firm Playtime, which also purchased the rights to the remake. The movie is also being produced by David Kaplan, Joshua Astrachan, Valery Guibal, and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert.

On September 16, Prime Video will host the Prime Video debut of the Goodnight Mommy remake from Amazon Studios.
