Horror comedy Gremlins, directed by Joe Dante, released nearly thirty-six years ago but still lives in the hearts of many. With a 7.3 rating on IMDb and 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this film even bagged a sequel in 1990, titled Gremlins II: The New Batch, directed by Dante. The original film tells the story of a salesman who, to find his son a Christmas present, goes the extra length and purchases a “mogwai” that he was warned against. Soon, things go sideways, and the result? A gang of Gremlins was terrorising the whole town on the eve of Christmas. The second movie follows Gizmo the Gremlin on his adventures as this time around him and his gang take over skycrapers in New York City.
What plans are in store for this installment and why the delay
Zach Galligan, who starred in the original Gremlins film, has said that it is obvious that a third film will be added to the franchise. Talking about the ten-part animation on HBO titled Gremlins: secrets of the Mogwai, he believes that the route adopted by most franchises is a way of planting seeds for future additions. Even director Chris Columbus (Home Alone, 1990) has revealed a script for Gremlins III that already exists. He also stated that instead of using CGI, he would use real puppets to create the effects of this film and once the legalities are all sorted out, they would be good to go.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is arriving on HBO soon
First announced in 2019, Secrets of the Mogwai will be set in 1920s Shanghai and follow Mr. Luke’s origin story. Battling and playing around with colourful monsters from the folklore of China, ten-year-old Sam and teenager Elle will try and reunite Gizmo with his family, but little do they know that a powerful businessman has unleashed a hellish army of evil Gremlins in order to capture the treasure this trio possesses. In 2020, directed Joe Dante told Daily Dead that animation might be the best route for the franchise as it can help explore much potential as it allows one to get away with more fiction and fantasy than live action could.
