Are you a fan of Japanese monster movies? Do you like it when these huge creatures wreak devastation on the human population only to be stopped by a hero or perhaps another kaiju? You have come to the right place because today we will show you 11 of the most terrifying monsters from the Godzilla universe. When it was initially released, Godzilla was perhaps the most well-known kaiju, and it caused a stir among spectators in both Asia and the rest of the world.
Godzilla the animated series first aired in 1998, and while it did not fare well on television and was eventually discontinued in favor of more popular animated shows like Pokemon, it is a hidden gem. The show picks up after the 1998 Godzilla film and investigates the possibility of an American Godzilla bonding with the person who discovered it. The series is now available on DVD, and while the picture quality is not perfect, it will keep you captivated.
The story follows Dr. Nick Tatopoulos, who led a search and discovered the final remaining Godzilla egg after the monster was destroyed. Nick and Zilla Junior grow up together and create a friendship that is explored in the episodes.
Nick also creates the Humanitarian Environmental Analysis Team (H.E.A.T. ), a task force that goes on a mission whenever there are reports of a monster or altered animal anywhere in the world. Without further ado, here are 11 of the most horrifying monsters to be found in this series.
Deep-Sea Squids – New Family [Season 1, Episode 1 and 2]
This large and dangerous kaiju is first mentioned in the first episode, when Nick and his team discover Zilla Junior and begin hearing stories from Jamaica about a massive monster with tentacles disturbing and destroying maritime shipping. The actual scope of its power, as well as what it looks like, is revealed in the second episode.
The Giant Squids had spewed tar on the surface of Jamaican oceans as part of their digestive system, and Elsie Chapman and Mendel Craven were assigned to investigate. They quickly deduced that the tar was some kind of external digestive system, but the Squids quickly coated them in tar and dragged them down.
The rest of the H.E.A.T team makes its way to Jamaica to find out about this sea monster and the Squids assault them right after they rescue Chapman and Craven. They dash down to the lower decks and manage to close the door, but a Squid tears it off. A confrontation between the team and the giant mutant squids ensues but the H.E.A.T has an ace up their sleeve.
They have Zilla Junior on their vessel with them and once the squids start attacking, out he comes. Godzilla destroys the largest one, which was on its way to catch Niko Tatopoulos. In retaliation, several Mutant Giant Squids then band together to bring Godzilla down. Due to Godzilla’s aquatic nature, this did not have the anticipated impact. Godzilla killed the last Squids after emerging, prompting their predator, Crustaceous Rex, to come to the surface owing to a scarcity of food.
Before Godzilla wiped out the entire species, the Mutant Giant Squids possessed a wide range of abilities and were extremely dangerous. The capacity to spew tar, which traps animals and slowly digests them alive, was its primary hunting technique. This mutant species has evolved to survive underwater and can be found in the ocean’s depths. The Mutant Giant Squids are also capable of holding individuals and transporting tiny ships underwater. The species goes extinct in the second episode of the series but before they do, they cause enough damage to the Jamaican seashore.
Crackler – What Dreams May Come [Season 1, Episode 7]
The Crackler will be our next creature to investigate. The Crackler is a strange-looking creature. It walks with two long forelimbs and four short hindlimbs with hooves. It also has a blue carapace that runs the length of its body, from its head to what appears to be two multi-segmented tails. The Crackler has six yellow eyes, a horn on its forehead, and its mouth is located between the blue and white parts of its head. It does not have teeth inside its mouth but has two fangs on its chin.
Sydney Walker built the Crackler by accident while receiving Theta wave treatment for insomnia. The problem was that the experimental therapy put him in a deep coma, and his rage erupted as a physical, purely electromagnetic, non-living monster after 45 years of suppression.
He makes his first appearance when he drains the power from a Manhattan building and threatens an elderly couple. The H.E.A.T squad, as is customary, goes on the hunt. The monster is tracked down to the city’s bus yards, where the tram is dispatched to capture it. In the bus yards, the Crackler appears and ruins a few buses. Monique soon catches up with Nick and Mendel, and the three of them go to save some people trapped inside a building while hiding from the Crackler. Mendel sends N.I.G.E.L, a robot, to acquire a reading on the Crackler.
Monique and Nick free the people, but the Crackler ruins the building’s facade and prevents them from fleeing. Nick then guides the group to a different portion of the building, but the Crackler obliterates the exit route. Nick devises a plan, and everyone is finally able to flee but the Crackler continues to chase them. Thankfully, Godzilla shows up in the nick of time and starts attacking the monster.
He uses his atomic breath power on it but it simply grows bigger so the altercation turns into a physical one. The group finally figures out that the Crackler is a manifestation of Sydney Walker but before they can do anything, it shows up at a baseball stadium and begins to wreak havoc.
However, the creature is finally defeated by Godzilla who makes it explode by using his atomic breath on a massive globe, engulfing it in flames and causing the Crackler to shatter into pieces.
Leviathan – Leviathan [Season 1, Episode 8]
There is always something strange and new hiding in the ocean’s depths, and the Leviathan is one of them. The Leviathan is an ancient ship discovered on the ocean floor, prompting scientists to investigate and determine what it was and where it came from. The H.E.A.T team goes to check it out as well but, on their way there, they are attacked by a Cryptocledius which is an aquatic long-necked reptile that went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous epoch, 65,000,000 years ago.
However, it appears that certain Cryptocledius species have managed to avoid extinction and were now attacking the H.E.A.T members. Godzilla comes to the rescue and fends off his attacks.
They finally arrive near the ship and uncover an ancient extraterrestrial spaceship at the ocean’s bottom. They begin their exploration, but are ambushed by Reptilians. However, they manage to find the chief of scientists, Alexander Preloran, and escape through concealed entrances.
He tells them to go because it was a sensitive first-contact situation with another species. He subsequently told H.E.A.T. that the ship crash landed there in the late Cretaceous period and had been sending a distress beacon ever since, which explained the tachyon emission. Preloran then locked them in a room, but the crew managed to escape with the help of N.I.G.E.L.
They eventually learn that the Tachyon controlled the ship, nurtured the reptilians, and assisted the Cryptocledius in surviving. The ultimate objective was for them to take over the Earth and utilise it as a new home, but they could only do it by using people as hosts. They try downloading their minds and punish every team member apart from Dr. Mendel Craven. He regains his composure and helps free the others, after which they manage to crash the ship and destroy the Tachyon’s source of intelligence, killing all of them.
However, the episode concludes by revealing that two Tachyons had captured two members of Preloran’s party.
DeadLoch – DeadLoch [Season 1, Episode 11]
In this episode, Niko Tatopoulos and Elsie Chapman view news from Scotland concerning a possible Loch Ness Monster attack. Elsie thinks it should be looked into, while Nick thinks it is a ruse. The two of them start arguing about it, and the rest of the group decides to go to the lake. That’s how the members of H.E.A.T cross paths with the Loch Ness Monster.
Nessie is a Mosasaur that has survived in Loch Ness and comes out to mate once every 20 years. She resembles how the Loch Ness Monster has been portrayed in the past: a gigantic water creature. Nessie and her species lived in peace until her baby was abducted by a scientist who planned to sell the one-of-a-kind newborn, despite Nessie’s wrath.
After witnessing a video of what seemed to be Nessie attacking a scientist’s facility, H.E.A.T. went to Scotland to investigate. Godzilla appeared during one of Nessie’s attacks, and the two engaged in multiple battles on land and underwater.
Thanks to Randy broadcasting the infant’s cries over the Loch, which the mother responded to, Godzilla did not realize Nessie was just attacking to find and defend her offspring until later. Godzilla and Nessie would then team together to save her kid from the scientist.
Godzilla then assists her in rescuing her child by tearing the cage apart in which the baby was imprisoned. After being reunited with her child, Nessie and Godzilla gave each other a ‘parting roar’. She is the only friendly or nice monster that the H.E.A.T comes across during their adventures.
Nessie is also one of the two cryptid-based kaijus from ‘Godzilla: The Series’, the other being the Yeti. The main difference is that the Yeti was revealed to be a machine, whereas Nessie was revealed to be a real person.
Despite having a confrontation with Godzilla, the episode and story of Nessie has a happy conclusion in which they immediately learn that she intended no harm and was simply acting out of maternal instinct. Nessie, unlike previous monster creatures, does not die at the end of the episode and is instead reunited with her baby.
Giant Mutant Bat And The Alien – Monster Wars [Season 1, Episode 12,13 and 14]
The Giant Mutant Bat species and the aliens seen in the 12th, 13th, and 14th episodes of season 1 are the animals we will look at next.
The Giant Mutant Bat species that began scaring people in Nigeria is introduced in the twelfth episode. Nigeria, a West African country, has given birth to a winged mutant. The Giant Bat was formerly known for attacking farmers and animals in West Africa, but when H.E.A.T. arrived, the Bat was ready.
It was also nearby that the H.E.A.T picked up on Tachyon signals and they went to investigate without knowing that it was coming from a military base which was run by the Tachyons ever since they had taken control of the two humans many episodes ago. The Tachyons are an alien species that the team had encountered in episode 8, called Leviathan.
They were aliens who wanted to inhabit Earth but could only do so with the help of human hosts. Godzilla and the rest of the team had destroyed their ship and they thought that all the aliens were dead as well. But two of them had managed to latch onto humans and make their way into the world.
Godzilla and the bat were quickly engrossed in their fight, chasing each other into a nearby city the instant they met. The Giant Bat escaped the reptile’s wrath by employing his high frequency, but his radar had been severely harmed by a previous plunge in the water.
Godzilla and the Giant Bat fought again soon after, and when Godzilla was trapped under a bridge, the Tachyons, an alien civilization secretly attempting to conquer Earth, took control of the bat and guided him back to Site Omega.
The aliens then dispatched the bat to launch an attack on Paris with King Cobra. As they attacked the French metropolis, the monsters swiftly broke free from the Tachyons’ control, and the bat withdrew to Site Omega to attack the alien fleet.
The aliens summoned Cyber-Godzilla to their aid, and the two battled it out. But the cybernetic Godzilla proved too powerful, knocking out the Giant Bat. The Giant Bat was captured after the conflict and imprisoned on Site Omega, which would later become Monster Island.
The creatures of Monster Island, including the Giant Bat, were freed by the group S.C.A.L.E. a few months later. After confronting a few creatures, the bat was recaptured and returned to his island.
Mimic – Trust No One [Season 1, Episode 21]
We meet a terrifying monster known as the Mimic in an episode suitably named ‘Trust No One.’ In its natural state, the organism is a gelatinous, greyish, shapeless biomass. If it comes into physical contact with another life form, it can use genetic sampling to adopt that creature’s shape, becoming anyone or anything. This is where the real threat arose, what if it took the form of the people you knew, and you never realized?
According to Philip, the monster was created as part of a French scientist’s hybridization experiment, which eventually proved “unsound.” Its original purpose was to simplify the process of mixing DNA hybridization easier so that new life forms might be produced. The creature, however, eventually developed its own thinking and was imprisoned in a drum and abandoned in the Amazon. Another species, its mate, was also imprisoned in a drum at the bottom of a river hundreds of kilometers away.
Years later, it was unintentionally set free by a treasure hunter, and it set out to find its counterpart so it could duplicate itself. The problem was soon reported to H.E.A.T., who was dispatched to the laboratory to deal with the beast. The creature confronted Monique in the shape of an anaconda during their search and impersonated her after leaving.
It quickly caused division among H.E.A.T. members because they couldn’t tell who was real and who wasn’t. They were able to disclose the creature’s cover because it had a higher body temperature than the original. It also imitated Elsie and escaped disguised as a monkey. It wanted to find its mate.
By pooling their mass, Mimic and its buddy were able to morph into Godzilla-sized beasts. Given the shapeshifter’s aggressive nature, H.E.A.T. chose to kill him with an anti-cellular harpoon dart, aware that their offspring had the potential to overtake mankind as the dominant species. The combined Mimics were soon pitted against an oncoming Zilla Junior, and while Zilla eventually triumphed, the Mimics transformed into a perfect replica of him. Nick was able to figure out who the Mimic was and hit the phony by putting his trust in his friendship with Zilla Junior. Finally, it was destroyed by Zilla’s atomic breath.
Norrzug the Iron Lion – Protector [Season 2, Episode 4]
Norrzug, the Iron Lion, a Sphinx-like kaiju, is introduced in the fourth episode of Season 2. Norzzug, Amon-long-serving city’s protector, became too dangerous and was dumped into a river, where he rusted solid for centuries.
Norzzug could absorb oil by dipping its paw in it. If the well has more to it, he could even draw it out of the ground. Norzzug is exceedingly hazardous as he could spit a devastating torrent of fire from his mouth as long as he ingests oil. Norzzug could also create tremendous hurricane-like winds by simply flapping its wings.
Archeologists found the statue in a dry river in modern times and employed special chemicals to remove the rust that had encased it. The rust had no longer enslaved Norzzug. It began attacking immediately, destroying oil facilities and absorbing the gasoline they contained. H.E.A.T. was dispatched, along with Godzilla Junior.
When Godzilla Junior discovered the gigantic statue in a refinery, the struggle between Godzilla Junior and Norzzug began. Norzzug defeated Godzilla Junior with hurricane-force winds, giving it ample time to leave for its old home, the now-defunct metropolis of Amon-Ra.
The creature was found sleeping by Ra. H.E.A.T., but a defective N.I.G.E.L. mistakenly alerted the beast of their presence. Norzzug responded promptly, launching a fire attack on N.I.G.E.L. The squad concealed themselves, and the armored giant cat soon ran out of oil, forcing it to take to the skies in search of food. Norzzug, by chance, left the crew with a fragment of its claw that would take them to the solution of their problem. They discovered its vulnerability to oxidation of its metallic surface as a result of this.
To catch the beast, they prepared a trap. They used oil to attract it near a salt mine, then covered it with a chemical that would hasten the rusting process once it was submerged. When Godzilla Junior arrived, the battle resumed.
Godzilla Junior eventually threw the cat-like creature into the sea, where the salt water reacted with the chemical and swiftly rusted the iron. It was too late for the statue to crawl out and perch on top of an oil tanker. Norzzug was rusted solid in the middle of a raging roar, putting a stop to its reign once more.
Medusa – Freak Show [Season 2, Episode 5]
Medusa is best known as the snake-headed gorgon from Greek mythology, but she was revealed to be a sea anemone kaiju in this series. Tobias Wilson, a mutant circus owner, discovered a mutated and disfigured anemone on a tropical atoll and named her Medusa and put her on display for the circus’ delight.
Medusa was capable of absorbing water from a victim’s body, or even water in general, merely by touching them. She increased in size as she absorbed more water. Medusa also had the ability to transform into a liquid at will, however she would melt if exposed to a heat source such as fire. All of these abilities made her quite the formidable foe for Godzilla.
Medusa broke loose by morphing into liquid form during a freak show in New York City in the episode ‘Freak Show.’ H.E.A.T., who was watching alongside Tobias, immediately launched an attack, and the mutant was soon on the loose, draining the victims dry. The beast continued to wade past the military power unlike any other, resurrecting her victims with massive amounts of water.
She entered the subway system and then the water reservoir after being forced to melt. The electric fence caused her to melt once more, and she drank from the city’s water supply, where she immediately grew multiple sizes.
Godzilla arrived just in time to fight her, but his atomic fire dissolved her and completely depleted him. Godzilla was left for dead after she was able to run. She is one of the few creatures capable of causing such harm to Godzilla. She made it to the sea, but Godzilla was back on the attack, courtesy of H.E.A.T. and the military that had his back.
He blasted the anemone repeatedly, stopping her from reforming or even attempting to strike again. The Heat-Seeker rapidly moved in when Nick called him back, sucking up the liquidated Medusa with a massive suction designed to mop up oil spills. Medusa was locked within the heated coils. What happened to her is still a mystery.
Giant Mutated Thorny Australian lizard – Area 51 [Season 2, Episode 10]
The Thorny Devil mutation that we witness in the 10th episode of season 2 is the result of nuclear tests in Area 51 in the 1950s. The Thorny Devil has an endless supply of ejectable spikes with enough poison to kill 20 scorpions.
It can also skewer objects at short ranges with its barbed tongue, and it has been shown to be strong enough to take on Godzilla, as it was able to fling Godzilla in the air, and displayed amazing combat skills despite its massive size. It demonstrates the ability to immediately burrow underground.
It also possesses a strong hide on his back that has proven to be resistant to many attacks, with the exception of his belly, which is a weak point. It has the ability to run and combat Godzilla for an extensive amount of time.
It was a good hunter, staying below to hide in the sand and waiting for its prey to approach close enough to attack. Despite being relatively heavy, it has shown no lack of speed in charging at his foes and making rapid maneuvers. Thanks to his strong hide, it is fireproof from the Godzilla radiation as demonstrated. Nonetheless, its stomach is the vulnerable site for attacks.
It escaped the underground habitat with the Giant Armadillo at the start of the episode. The Thorny Devil remained below, attempting to burrow away, while the armadillo was apprehended before it could get past the facility’s perimeter. Randy Hernandez and the base’s administrator, Dr. Candace Kirk, came across the creature and requested H.E.A.T.’s assistance.
The Thorny Devil destroyed their jeep and attacked them with its spikes when the others arrived to save them. Godzilla burrowed beneath the outer wall to battle the Thorny Devil, recognizing the danger to his friends. However, Godzilla’s Atomic Ray couldn’t penetrate Thorny Devil’s hide and he was attacked by the Devil’s toxic spikes instead.
The beast lunged for the gates, ready to ram them, as the humans struggled to come up with a way to stop it. Randy was then chosen to deliver a tranquiliser dart into the heart of Thorny Devil.
He caught up to Thorny Devil with only the tranquiliser rifle and shot the dart, but it fell off Thorn Devil’s skin. Godzilla had recovered enough power by then to fight the Thorny Devil once more. Godzilla finally used his Atomic Ray to flip Thorny Devil onto his back and slay him.
Armillaria A Giant Fungus – Underground Movement [Season 2, Episode 15]
Armillaria was one of the most unusual kaijus created by the Godzilla series’ creators. When you look at mushrooms, you do not think of them as terrifying or harmful. Armillaria was a massive mutant fungus with thousands of tentacles. In Michigan, it invaded and ruined agriculture.
Armillaria possessed dozens of tentacles that could shoot out from its body, taking in prey and regenerating if damaged, as well as emitting a chemical that breaks down amino acids. It has a mushroom shape, similar to the scrapped kaiju Deathla. Armillaria’s tentacles resemble the Graboids from Tremors as they rise from the ground and seize objects, and it also resembles the Toho kaiju Matango as a mutated fungus.
Several members of H.E.A.T. were in Miami when Armillaria began threatening and intimidating farmers in Michigan. They were attempting to resolve a lawsuit filed by Miami Beach in response to Godzilla’s damages inflicted during his encounter with the Giant Bat.
When Randy and Craven, who were staying in New York at the time, learned about the fungus’ attacks in Michigan, they decided to take care of it on their own. Armillaria, on the other hand, assaulted them and left them isolated with no food, supplies, or means of contact. Fortunately, H.E.A.T. was able to track them down.
Godzilla had Armillaria dug up by the military and put into a barren area of sand dunes. Armillaria died owing to a lack of food as well as Godzilla’s legendary atomic breath. Later, H.E.A.T. found that the lawsuit which had been filed by Miami beach against them had been dismissed.
Deep-Dweller – Tourist Trap [Season 2, Episode 19]
The Deep Dweller, a large fish kaiju that dwells in the depths of the ocean, is the final creature for today. It appears in Episode 19 of Season 2 and is a massive fish kaiju that lives in the depths of the ocean. We all know that the great bulk of the world’s oceans have yet to be discovered, and this is just one of the terrifying creatures that lurk beneath the surface.
The Deep-Dweller resembles a huge frogfish, with a massive mouth full of teeth as its main weapon, spikes emerging from its head, a row of thorns running down its back, and two little arms with three claws each.
The Deep Dweller was a deep-sea creature that was dragged to the surface and, as the name implies, became confused by the light and began attacking passing ships. The Deep-Dweller is a great swimmer and has a 40-foot broad jaw with a ferocious bite to match. It does, however, have a flaw: having grown up at the depths of the ocean, the light confuses and irritates him.
It quickly drew the attention of H.E.A.T., who began looking into the wreckage of the windfall cruiser that had been attacked by the beast, but inadvertently startled the enormous fish. N.I.G.E.L flipped on the lights, mowing him down and immensely enraging him.
The Deep-Dweller then surfaced and attacked the Heat Seeker, but Godzilla appeared and fought the creature underwater, after which the Deep-Dweller vanished into the Hudson Canyon. H.E.A.T. devised a plan to lure him out and sedate him.
Despite being incapacitated by the tranquilizer shot, Godzilla managed to hold off the Deep-Dweller long enough for H.E.A.T. to employ lights to attract his attention and take him home.
They got snagged on it, nevertheless, and dragged into pressures their submarine could not handle. The Deep-Dweller is then confronted by Godzilla, who burrows out of the shelf and breaks them free.
They eventually let the huge fish swim out into the vastness of the ocean, knowing that the destruction was caused by the fact that it was not in its normal environment, and the light had confused and infuriated him.
That concludes today’s creature feature. We hope you enjoyed it, and be sure to see some of our other videos on frightening and dangerous animals from many universes.
