Does Michael Myers Have A Conscience? Why Does He Not Kill Children?

Michael Myers from the iconic horror movie, Halloween, directed by John Carpenter and released in 1978, has become one of the most iconic slasher murderers, and while he appears to kill at random, he has never killed a child and we wonder why?

Halloween depicts the story of Michael Myers, a six-year-old boy who murdered his sister on Halloween night in 1963. As a result, Michael was committed to Smith’s Grove Sanatorium, where he remained silent for years. Michael escaped and returned to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, fifteen years later, where he began stalking Laurie Strode and her friends on Halloween night. When Laurie died in the original timeline, Michael switched his attention to her daughter, Jamie Lloyd, who became the only survivor of Michael’s murdering spree. He did not, however, murder Jamie or injure her while she was a child.

Kids have also crossed his path on occasion, he always spares them. While none of the films explain why Michael never goes after children, fans have come up with their own theories.

Many Halloween fans believe Michael Myers is unconcerned about children and hence sees no reason to murder them. Others have gone a step further. Carpenter once elaborated on the two types of evil in an interview for the TV series Screamography, according to a Halloween enthusiast. Carpenter noted that one is a tangible and external force that threatens a group’s well-being, while the other is evil that resides within a person, comparable to an illness. Michael falls into the first category, so he doesn’t kill children because they aren’t a threat to him because he is a form of external evil.

It’s not Michael Myers’ style to murder children, indicating that he still has an ethical and maybe even empathetic side to him, which can reveal a lot about his troubled psyche. It’ll be interesting to see if this continues in Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, or if he changes his own rules.
