It appears that the Lions will be the centre of attention. Beginning Aug. 9, HBO Sports, NFL Films, and the Detroit Lions will collaborate on “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Detroit Lions.” The Detroit Lions will be featured on the hit HBO series for the first time this summer.
According to a statement made Monday by HBO and NFL Films to league owners at their annual meeting, the Detroit Lions will be the featured club in the 2022 training camp version of “Hard Knocks.”
The series will provide an unvarnished, all-access look at what goes on in an NFL team’s preseason and training camp. HBO will cast a light on what it takes to be a Detroit Lion in a series of weekly episodes.
The footage will be shot on location at the Lions’ training camp in Allen Park, Michigan, and will focus on the players’ and coaches’ daily activities, including meeting rooms, training rooms, living quarters, and practise fields. Over the course of the series, more than 1,750 hours of footage will be collected by the NFL Films crew, which will consist of 30 personnel.
The Lions were one of three clubs who could not refuse an invitation from the documentary series that follows NFL teams during training camp due to NFL rules requiring participation with the show. The Carolina Panthers along with the New York Jets were the other two teams.
Coach Dan Campbell, whose colourful news conferences and odd aphorisms added levity and interest to his 3-13-1 debut with the Lions last season, is a big part of the team’s attractiveness.
The spotlight will not only be drawn in on the eclectic group of rising stars, free agent newcomers, fresh rookies, and seasoned veterans. Coach Dan Campbell, who is in his second season with the squad, will be the focus of the series.
HBO usually chooses the teams that will appear in the series, and the pool of teams from which they can choose each season usually includes no teams with first-year head coaches, no teams that have made the playoffs in the previous two seasons, and no teams that have appeared in the series in the previous ten years.
This is the 17th season of the 18-time Sports Emmy Award-winning series, which has aired 82 episodes across 16 seasons. Liev Schreiber, an American actor, screenwriter, producer, and director, will narrate the series for the 16th time.
“We are ecstatic about the opportunity to showcase the City of Detroit and the incredible culture we are cultivating at the Lions,” said Rod Wood, President and CEO of the Detroit Lions. “HBO Sports and NFL Films are the best of the best, and we’re confident they’ll be fantastic partners in telling our story to football fans all around the world.”
The five-episode season premieres at 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 9. On select Tuesdays, the series will air additional hour-long episodes, all leading up to the season finale on Sept. 6. The sports-themed reality show will be available on HBO Max and will be broadcast on HBO.
The Lions couldn’t say no to being the featured team of HBO’s documentary series “Hard Knocks” because they haven’t been on the show in ten years, don’t have a first-time head coach, and haven’t made the playoffs in the previous two seasons. Two other clubs, the Jets and Panthers, also met these requirements, but the league chose Detroit over them.
It’s not hard to see why. Dan Campbell, the head coach, should be able to fill an entire episode with his own stuff. It will also bring a franchise that has been hidden for far too long into the spotlight.
Ken Rodgers, Vice President of NFL Films and Senior Coordinating Producer, expressed his enthusiasm for the forthcoming season. “We are both happy and thankful for the opportunity to highlight a storied organization like the Lions as Hard Knocks enters its third decade inside NFL training camps,” he added. “Detroit’s city, culture, and coaching staff all exude an exhilarating energy that will make the show must-see television this summer.”
The 17th season of Hard Knocks is set to be the highlight of football fans’ summers as the first-ever sports-based reality series and one of the fastest-turnaround programs on television.
The Lions will be the 15th NFL team to appear on “Hard Knocks” season. The Dallas Cowboys have made three appearances, the most recent being last year, while the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals have each done it twice.
The Indianapolis Colts were the prime focus of the inaugural in-season episode of the show last fall. It’s unclear if that format will be used again in 2022.
If you haven’t watched “Hard Knocks,” it is a documentary that follows the team’s key storylines over their arduous five-week training camp. As players struggle for their jobs, HBO cameras provide unprecedented behind-the-scenes access, offering fans a humanizing experience of one of the toughest months of the year for football players.
This is a terrific opportunity for fans to see the behind-the-scenes operations of an organization that has been wrapped in secrecy for far too long.
“Hard Knocks” will premiere on Tuesday, August 9 at 10 p.m. ET, and will consist of five weekly hour-long episodes. Make a note on your calendars.
