Due to the popularity of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad and the massively popular Peacemaker sequel series, as well as the debut of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson (The Devil All The Time) and Zoe Kravitz, everyone is presently enamoured with the DC Universe (KIMI).
The direction and marketing strategies that DC and Warner Bros. changed for the series have so far received positive reviews, which also appears to have re-energized the fan base. For fans of DC’s Harley Quinn, though, this has made the wait for Season 3 even more… difficult.
After a successful conclusion in April 2020, production on Harley Quinn Season 3 started later that year, in September, with showrunners Patrick Schumacker (Abbott Elementary) and Justin Halpern (Powerless) informing viewers to anticipate the conclusion of the following chapter in Harley Quinn’s saga by late 2021 or early 2022.
Fans are questioning when we will finally see our favourite female anti-hero, her companion in crime, and beloved group of misfits return to the small screen three months into the year 2022. Here is what we currently know about it.
We won’t have to wait long to see Harley, Ivy, King Shark, Clayface, and Frank the Plant all back together as Harley Quinn Season 3 will premiere on HBO Max on July 28, 2022. The first two episodes of season number three will, however, be premiering at San Diego Comic-Con, so if you’re going, you’re in good. The preview screening is not scheduled for a specific day, although this year’s Comic-Con runs from July 21 to July 24.
In October 2021, HBO Max published a “first peek” for Season 3. As noted on Collider, as part of the DC Fandome Event from the previous year, a 2:53 minute teaser with a partly animated storyboard was made available.
Not much of the narrative is revealed other than Harley and Ivy, who are now a couple, causing mayhem and Harley referring to their shenanigans as the Eat, Bang, Kill Tour. The first six issues of a limited edition spin-off comic book series with the same name were released in August of last year. The Eat, Bang, Kill Tour comics follow Harley and Ivy on their cross-country road trip as they are being hunted by GCPD Commissioner Gordon. They take place between Seasons 2 and 3 of the show.
Though Harley Quinn herself broke the fourth wall to say the season was still in development and that “animation takes long,” the DC Fandome teaser did express a genuine apologies to all the “women, gents, theys, and gays” for the delay.
On June 28, the first official Season 3 teaser trailer was posted online. The trailer gives fans their long-awaited first look at all the chaos the new season will inclu, including Harley and Ivy as an official couple, the appearance of Swamp Thing, Batman and Catwoman getting a little flirty, and a strange cameo appearance by James Gunn involving Clayface. The trailer is set to the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts jam “Bad Reputation.”
Fans may anticipate more of their favourite DC heroes and villains in Season 3 according to showrunners Schumacker and Halpern, who have both made this suggestion frequently. Nightwing, John Constantine, the Mad Hatter, the Clock King, and Amanda Waller have all been confirmed as making an appearance thus far.
Once more, we have no idea who will be providing the voices for these characters. Nightwing will be played by What We Do in the Shadows actor Harvey Guillén, however it is yet unknown who the other performers will be. Given the incredible list of prior guest performers, which includes folks like Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle), the late Jessica Walters (Archer), and Jameela Jamil, anyone the show’s producers choose to cast will definitely surprise and dazzle audiences (The Good Place).
On Twitter in March 2021, Schumacker made a sneaky cameo guest appearance suggestion. The Collider crew assumed the tweet was from one of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad right away. It has since been confirmed that James Gunn would play a fictionalised version of himself in the future season.
The Flight Attendant’s Kaley Cuoco as Harley, Marvel What If’s Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Jason Alexander as Sy Borgmen, Resident Alien’s Alan Tudyk as Clayface, among others, Superstore’s Matt Oberg as Kite Man, Bob’s Burgers’ Ron Funches as King Shark, Arrested Development’s Tony Hale as Dr. Psycho, Diedrich Bader as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Christopher Meloni (Happy) as Commissioner Gordon.
Where the Eat, Bang, Kill Tour comic book series left off, Season 3 will pick off. At the conclusion of the last issue, Harley and Ivy can be seen scurrying away from Commissioner Gordon and headed for Central City (the hometown of Barry Allen aka The Flash).
Schumacker and Halpern, the show’s creators, have said that Season 3 would explore more of Pamela Isley’s background while also furthering Poison Ivy’s new sexual relationship with Harley Quinn. In a 2020 interview with Deadline, Halpern said that Harley’s past would affect how she and Ivy interact. She posed the following questions:
How can you be in a decent relationship when you’ve spent the most of your life in poisonous and unhealthy relationships? What impact does the baggage you bring from all these previous relationships have on the current relationship, which you genuinely want to work?
Viewers could also expect a standalone Joker episode, like to the standalone Batman episode from Season 2, as well as more of Christopher Meloni’s dysfunctional police commissioner Gordon and his attempts to repair both the GCPD’s and his reputations.
According to HBO Max, the Season 3 official storyline summary is as follows:
“In season three of this caustic and hilarious adult animated comedy series, the chaos and crazy continue. As the new power couple of DC villains, Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) return to Gotham after finishing their “Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour.” With the help of their motley team, including King Shark (Ron Funches), Clayface (Alan Tudyk), and Frank the Plant (JB Smoove), “Harlivy” aspires to be the best version of itself while simultaneously advancing Ivy’s long-desired goal of converting Gotham into an Eden paradise.”
Both the first and second seasons had their debuts on the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service in 2019. Since then, the majority of DC programming, including the Justice League Zack Snyder cut and James Gunn’s Peacemaker starring John Cena, has found a new home on HBO Max (Vacation Friends). Online streaming of Harley Quinn seasons 1 and 2 is presently available.
